    Write delay error

I relaoded XP on one of my PCs just about 2 months ago and it was running very well until recently.

It's an older AMD system (2.8ghz or something close).
I have 320g Primary IDE drive and a 500g Secondary IDE. I have over 450g of MP3 music on the 500g. I was backing it up to my 500g external USB drive (I've done this before with no problem, other than it takes about 12 hours to back up). This time, the PC locked up 3 times trying to complete the backup, so I had to reboot. I finally finished the backup and removed the USB drive and the PC continued to lockup. Afraid that my 500g (secondary drive) was going bad, I removed it from the PC and it quit locking up. After several attempts, I realized that either the Secondary or the USB drive (both) would get a Write Delay Error and lock it up. But I tried attaching them to my other PC (P4 2.4ghz) and haven't encountered any problems with the write delay at all.

So, I'm kinda thinking the write delay problem is associated with the PC, not the drives at all. (I haven't seen the problem with only my Primary drive (320g), so I'm not 100%)

I searched here and couldn't find any suggestions.

(I did have this on my primary PC (mentioned above, P4 2.4ghz) several months ago, but I ended up reloading XP and haven't experienced it since then.

I'll try googling it, but usually find a solution from MS that is too technical to follow.

Are these SATA drives? I had problems with one of mine and it turned out to be an SATA cable gone bad. The symptoms sound somewhat similar.

Both IDE, one is an external USB drive, the other was an internal with an IDE cable, but I also pulled it out and connected an IDE / USB adaptor and external power supply to it an connected it to the USB connection to.
So basically I've experienced the write delay error with a dedicated internal drive, a dedicated external / USB drive, and an internal drive connected with an IDE / USB adaptor.

But, both of these drives work without error when connected to my other PC. Both PCs are setup with XP Home SP3.
