Resolved [RESOLVED] Updating Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Software

I use Secunia PSI to warn me when software on my Dell Inspiron 6400 (Windows XP Home) needs updating. The program is telling me that my Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection Software 10.x is insecure and needs to be updated.

I went to the Intel site and downloaded the updated software (version 12.1.2.0). Now, this may seem a dumb question… but I’m not sure what to do next! The download came in a zipped folder which I unzipped, and I presume that I have to double click on one of the files, but which one? There are 2 sys files and 2 exe files. I’m scared that if I click on the wrong one that I’ll wreck something. Can some kind guy explain the correct process I need to follow to update this?

    Thanks
    Mike

What are the filenames (and extensions) of the four files?

I think you've downloaded the Admin package - you only need the Connection Utility itself. There should only be 1 executable file in this download.

Here is the link for XP:

Further to that, I always download Dell updates/drivers/software from the Dell site. Intel also recommend that you get the updates via the manufacturer's website.

Here is the link for Dell:

The version on the Dell site is slightly older (11.5.0.0 (TIC148234), A13), but will get you past the security issue.

Thanks. I took Tek's advice and downloaded from the Dell site. Installing went well although I had a few anxious moments setting up the connection as I hadn't noted down one vital piece of info. Fortunately I remembered it. How important to note down every PIN, password, etc, etc!

I just want to say thanks to you guys for your help. I really appreciate it. I'd be lost without it. It's really comforting to know that you can get good advice on this site.

I wish you a Very Happy Christmas & a Great New Year.
    Mike
