Tip: A feature of most of the avast! programs is their ability to update themselves automatically. If you are connected to the Internet, virus database updates are downloaded and installed automatically without any user action.
The availability of a new version is checked when an Internet connection is established, and every four hours afterwards.

I recently found 2 installations of Avast that were still running the engine version from last summer (definitions were fully up-to-date.) Since then, there have been at least 3 engine updates (with several key changes.)
Since these users were obviously not doing the engine updates they should have been, I changed the update settings to automatically update the engine version whenever new ones become available. It's not necessarily ideal (especially if the update has some unknown bugs) but at least they'll have the best protection. (One user had been mildly infected with adware that the latest version would have prevented.)
