Resolved [RESOLVED] McAfee: "Potentially Unwanted Program"

    Hi,

I'm using Win XP Home Ed w/SP2 on a Dell E510 w/Intel Duo Core. For AntiVirus software I'm using McAfee SecurityCenter (VirusScan v13.0) with the latet definition files from McAfee (last updated yesterday).

There are times when I notice that my DSL connection is continuously pinging the internet (constant activity showing on the modem). I do a scan when I notice that, and McAfee reports the file, "Dial-182", as being a "potentially unwanted program", giving me the option to delete it. I delete it every time. I also look for it manually to make sure I've got everything deleted, but can't find anything that McAfee didn't find.

I'm usually good for awhile, a couple of days, maybe. But then I notice the constant activity on the modem again, and another scan reveals that the "Dial-182" program is back.

Why might this thing keep coming back? Feels like something else malicious is on my 'puter somewhere.

Any thoughts on McAfee? A certain systAdmin I know has a very low opinion of McAfee, recommends AVG. What do you recommend?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts/comments.

    Print these instructions out.

NOTE. If any of the programs listed below refuse to run, try renaming executive file to something else; for instance, rename hijackthis.exe to screw_you.exe

    1. Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
    http://www.superantispyware.com/

    * Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
    * Close SUPERAntiSpyware.

    PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET

    Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; select Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

    * Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
    * Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
    * Under [b]General and Startup" tab, make sure, Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts option is UN-checked.
    * Click the Scanning Control tab.
    * Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    - Close browsers before scanning.
    - Scan for tracking cookies.
    - Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

    * Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
    * Back on the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
    * On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    * On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
    * Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    * After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK.
    * Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click Next.
    * A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then click the Finish button to return to the main menu.
    * If asked if you want to reboot, click Yes.
    * To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    - Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    - Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    - If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    - Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.

    * Click Close to exit the program.
    Post SUPERAntiSpyware log.
NOTE: Tracking cookies can be omitted from the log.

    RECONNECT TO THE INTERNET

    RESTART COMPUTER!

    2. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php to your desktop.
(Malwarebytes is free to use as a manual scanner. Payment is only required if you wish to have it run and update automatically which is not necessary for our purposes)

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
    * Post the log back here.

The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
    Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

    RESTART COMPUTER!

    3. Download, install, and run HijackThis:
    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
    Post HijackThis log.

Thanks, Broni, for your extensive insts.

Might be a little while to get back here with the results. I'll post back when I'm done.

After you're finished with the cleanup, this question remains.

There are lots of opinions on what to run... and no absolute answers. No antivirus/anti-malware or whatever can give 100% protection. None! If you read of any that claim to do so, run from it as fast as you can because they aren't being honest.

IMO, the best course of action revolves around minimizing the potential for damage. Don't use IE for browsing, don't surf dicey sites (porn, software cracking sites, etc.), keep Windows patches fully up-to-date, surf the web as a Limited User and many, many more.

As for the direct answer, McAfee vs. AVG, if you are generally doing ok with McAfee and like it, I'd stay with it. Based on the thought that nothing can catch everything bad, in typical use, I highly doubt AVG will catch more nasties than McAfee.

    I agree 100% with Train.
On a side note, even, if I don't like AVG anymore, I believe, it gives you much better protection, than McAfee, or Norton.

I use Avast on one of our laptops, and AntiVir on all of our other computers (five at the moment). I'm pleased with both. Small footprint, automatic daily updates, accurate malware detection and they're both free.

McAfee is marginally better than Norton IMHO. Having no A/V at all is safer. Why? - when you have no A/V installed, you know it. When you have McAfee or Norton installed, you think you have protection. If it weren't for their respective marketing departments - the ony effective component of either company - ther sales would be nil.

I don't use either Norton or McAfee for several reasons but one reason that is rarely mentioned is the possibility that virus writers would modify their malware to avoid the tests used by the most popular anti-virus programs.

And have been doing it for some time and neither company has said they fixed it. And if I remember right, it took a uninstall, reboot and reinstall to fix things.

    Ok,

Sorry for delay; end of year tasks, especially this year, are driving me insane! Had to configure backup machine and then complete 6 rush order projects! Damn, I hate rush orders!

Main production machine (the Dell E510) was found to have 3 keyloggers, and over 280 adware POS files! Damn ... (see logs below) ... cleaned up, but 6 hrs prod time used for tech probs.

Thanks for the insts, Broni; it seems to have corrected the problem. No more "unauthorized activity" on the DSL.

Thanks, everyone, at VirtualDr; pro insts and advice when I need it, especially when I just ain't got the time. You guys helped me out of more than a few scrapes in the past!

I used to be Mac sysAdmin back in the day of syst 8.6 ... could always wipe the drive and start over with completely fresh install if things got too far outta hand. Can't do that on Win. Maybe time to go with Mac OS X, or one of the Linux distros.

Was it that "Tomorrow Never Dies" Bond flick? That guy, Elliot Carver, is talking to his people, and he asks about whether a certain software package is ready. The answer the guy gives him is so much like IRL: "And it's full of bugs so that people will have to keep updating all the time" or something to that effect. Very cheesy puns on the big screen ... but very much a pain in the --- IRL; sounds like Bill Gates' plan all along.

RE: McAfee ... subscription runs out in Mar '09. It's been ok, and as people say, no software gets everything. But ...

... I've been slowly becoming a fan of Open Source / Linux. Generally same features as other $$$oftware, but free of charge.

Any Linux converts? How do you like it? How's the security with the more popular distros, such as Ubuntu? Same, better, worse?

So ... here are the logs:

    Malware-wise, the log is clean.
    We'll do some housekeeping, though.

*** You need to update Java:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11
Uninstall all previous versions of Java through Add\Remove ("Programs and Features" in Vista).

    *** Download, and run CTFMON-Remover: http://www.gerhard-schlager.at/en/pr...ctfmonremover/
The CTFMON-Remover helps you removing the annoying CTFMON.EXE from your Windows operating system. The program is easy to use and displays whether the CTFMON.EXE is installed and running or not. If it was found then you can remove it within seconds. Just in case that you need the CTFMON sometime in the future there is also an option to restore the original one.
Note:The CTFMON.EXE is among other things responsible for changing the language schema of your keyboard (e.g. for switching between the German and English keyboard layout). So in case you are using this feature you shouldn't remove or disable the CTFMON.EXE!
NOTE. CTFMON.EXE is not a threat, but unnecessary startup, which can't be disabled in any other way.

*** Download, and run QuickTime Killer: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...e-Killer.shtml
After downloading, double click on EnGraphQuickTimeKillerInstaller.msi file.
You may be asked to download, and install .NET Framework
QuickTime Killer will remove QuickTime from start up and kill any running QuickTime processes. This application runs silently at start up and closes itself as soon as it takes care of QuickTime. QuickTime itself won't be removed from your computer, and will be available whenever needed.
NOTE. QuickTime is not a threat, but unnecessary startup, which can't be disabled in any other way.

    1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

    2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

    3. Put a checkmark next to the following HijackThis entries (some entries will be checkmarked to disable unnecessary startups; in those cases [marked with *], no actual program will be removed):

And it's full of bugs so that people will have to keep updating all the time
I just researched a problem with the Python interpreter for another thread. This is a mature open source application. There are currently over 2000 bugs ( http://bugs.python.org/ ) being researched (or awaiting research). I wonder how long Microsoft's list is for Windows?

Except for the most trivial programs they all are full of bugs. Fortunately, most bugs manifest themselves only in very obscure circumstances so we rarely encounter them. Applies to Linux, Mac, and every OS.

The only exception may be NASA code. Its been at least 10 years since I saw a report on their software development program but it was impressive. It was also enormously expensive. None of us could afford any application that was developed using such standards.

    Updated HijackThis Log

    Hi, Broni,

    Thanks for further cleanup insts.

    Here's the updated Hijackthis Log.

    Again, sorry for delay ...

How often should extensive scans like this be done?

For learning about proper Win syst maint (that is, NOT waiting until I get into trouble ) do you have any recommended websites (other than Microsoft, which might give you 100 pages of material on Why 1 + 1 = 2 )?
