Readyboost

Hi all, I found this option quite by accident when plugging in a thumb drive. So whats up with this? Are there any benifits from it? I found a small write up about it in a Computer mag, but it did not explain much. Thanks

Got a GB or more of ram? If yes, it is not worth the trouble.

Yep. Just in case, I have SD card plugged in, but I see no difference in my 2GB Vista behavior.

I tried it out extensively when I first started using Vista, it made no discernible difference when I was running with 2GB of RAM, let alone when I upped to 4GB. If you are running with less that 2GB it may help a bit. Getting more RAM would help a lot more though.

Thanks for the replies. I bought a 4 gig OCZ stick to give it a try and as you stated I don't see much difference in Vista performance. I am running 2 gigs of Corsair XMS in my system. I am getting ready to upgrade this system with a new mainboard , CPU and ram.

I have Asus Nforce 4 sli mainboard now with dual gfx cards and a 4400x2 cpu. Are the parts listed above worth the effort. Or would a quad core be better? My system runs pretty sweet now so I am not wanting to waste money. I do some gaming and watch movies ect... Just wondering if the jump to am2 and DDR2 is worth it. Thanks

On my 3gb laptop anytime I am doing anything process / memmory intensive and I remember I pop up the task manager and have a look and I have never seen memory usage over 50%.

The only thing I have not tried yet and where readyboost might have an effect no matter what the original ram would be something like Photoshop / Gimp and having a lot of big (byte size) images open and the redraw rate whenever you pop one forward. i.e. reading an image that has been paged out to readyboot compared with one that has been paged out to HD.

Photo shop, just move the cache to a different hdd and make sure to cross the ide.
