Why the increase in file size from DVD rip to encode WMV?
I rip alot of DVD and notice that when I rip into WMV and then encode it with Windows Encoder 9 that the file size goes from 1gb to 4gb. How and why did it increase 4 time it size?

That happens quite normally when you go from one codec to another. Lack of / difference in compression makes a huge difference.
Example:
A 400 MB .avi will turn into about 3.9Gb of VOBs.

So when I rip my DVD and I know that it saved as WMV, how do I know what version (not sure if i'm saying the right term) of WMV? The reason I ask is that I have a Media Center Extender from D-LINK DSM-510 and you have to encode to Windows Media Video 9. I want to save as much room as I can on my computer, but not lose to much quality of my videos.

You can use DVDShrink with Vob files using the Re-Author feature and letting it do it's default dual recode to shrink the size...
If your not familiar with shrink, the guides are here ...
Stupid question? No such thing!

It's not the size of the DVD that I rip cause it under 1gb when I rip it to WMV. But once I encoded the WMV to Windows Media Encoder 9 it jumps up to over 4gb. I wonder if I just save the DVD WMV video if it will play on my DLINK DSM-510
