XP install restart freezes!
Trying to install XP on an old HDD that I thought was OK! (The HD has been formatted and partitioned) The initial boot from the OS CD and initial install goes OK. When the program calls for the computer to restart, it restarts and boots from the HDD. It will usually proceed to the point where the "Windows XP" splash screen comes up with three blue dots underneath that travel from left to right. Frequently, it freezes at this stage and goes no further. Occasionally, it proceeds on the the "Windows Setup" screen which appears for a few seconds. The screen then blanks out for a second or two and then comes up with a light blue screen with a mouse pointer in the center. If it makes it this far, it always freezes at this point and goes not further with the setup.
Any idea as to the cause? Could the HDD be defective?
Thanks for any help,
John

I'm not sure how old and big (space) your HDD is but have you tried to fdisk your drive, format and run scandisk and then make a fresh XP installation? Maybe that can help.

This HDD is 120 GB. I did do a full format and put one partition on it. This is a "fresh" XP installation - nothing's on the HDD! I didn't, however, run scandisk - is that done to repair or lock-out any bad areas on the disk?

Well, is it the only HDD on the machine connected?
1. Try removing all the other HDDs and install
2. check your memory, if you have 2 memory sticks, try to remove one and work with one, also change memory slots. May be one of your memory sticks is damaged but working, so try changing them and see which one works.
3. Try removing any pc card or any other device that is not essential during the installation, maybe a device can be causing the problem.
4. To be certain the HDD is not defective, slave it to another HDD and run chkdsk, that can eliminate some of the problems.
5. use your default cmos settings.
I'm not a genius in this but I hope this will help.
