    Compaq Presario 5440/Windows 98

Can the OS(Win 98) on this Compaq computer be upgraded to say, Windows 98se, or even 2000 or XP? I've heard that the BIOS on a Compaq are on the hard drive and any attempt to upgrade will wipe them out. The HD is 18.6 GB so it should hold 98se or 2K without problems.

The BIOS on that PC should be on the motherboard. You could upgrade to 98SE with no problems, and you could probably upgrade to 2000 or XP if you maxed out the memory.

XP will need about 5 minutes to boot up. Not good.

    K6-II (450) cpu
    Maximum Memory: 384MB
    Slots: 3 (3 banks of 1)
    Standard Memory: 64MB removable
    USB Support: 1.x Compliant
    PC100 is the ram needed.

98SE or W2k would be best. And seeing that hdd you list, it will take a 30GB hdd too. and by using a ATA 133 pci card, you can install the largest hdd made. And depending on the card, up to 4 of them. But you need a bigger power supply for more than one.
