DVD-RW missing

I have a 1.6 Ghz computer running Win XP home. All of a sudden my two
DVD drive letters were missing in my computer. I went to device manager
and found the following and all have yellow marks on them:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but
cannot find the hardware device. (code 41) All three below had this
statement.

DVDRW DRW-55163
IDE DVD-ROM 16X
VOBID InstantDrive CD SCSI CdRom device

I tried to troubleshoot and said it could not help.
I went have in time with system restore-no help.

I have a Trios II hard drive selector switch with the second hard drive on
this computer running Win 98se. I switched to this hard drive and both
DVD Rom drive worked with the drive letters showing up. It is not
a hardware problem within the computer.

How do I fix this? Jerry

Jerry, normally that is caused by multi installs of those devices.

In Safe Mode, remove all instances of them and reboot to windows.

Windows should pick them up and reinstall the drivers.

What does the above mean. How do I remove all all instances of them.
The drivers are all working but cannot find the devices. I can get into
safe mode but then I need to know what to look for and do.

Uninstall every instance of the driver that you can find in Device Manager, then reboot and let Windows re-detect the drives.

And in Safe Mode, which is the only place you will see if the device is installed more than once, remove every listing for a cd/dvd device.

What you are seeing is normal if there are multi installs or corrupt drivers.

Yes, single click each the R-click and select uninstall.

I went into safe mode and found the same 3 drivers and deleted them. Then
I rebooted and windows said it found new hardware. In My Computer the
drive letters still did not appear. I went into device manager the the drivers
were back but still with yellow symbols on them. Now what can I do?

Next step I would try.
Shutdown, disconnect the hardware, all cables and ribbons.
Boot up and check device manager, remove them if they show up.
Reboot a couple times.

Plug back in, and the ribbons, I would plug and unplug a couple times from the mobo too, which tends to clean the contacts.

Boot up and see what happens.

Could be a bad cable or the IDE Controller needs to be reinstalled. You might look for an update for the motherboards chipset while your at it. An update may improve things.

I was going to try that. Should I remove the drivers in safe mode or full
windows. I have a second hd on this computer running win 98se. It is
connected by a Trios transfer switch. In win 98se both DVDs work.
I don't think it is a cable problem. I get the message code 41, cannot find
device. What does code 41 mean?

PROBLEM SOLVED. The above site works well. In Microsoft Help and Support
under Rsolutions open 915092 and this will explain the problem. Next click
on Download Guided Help. Agree to the terms and click on automatic repair.
Next restart and the problem is repaired. Before you do this repair go to
device manager and uninstall all the drivers associated with DVD/CD that
have yellow marks on them. Then repair, restart and all drivers are installed
correctly. You do not have to edit the registry yourself. This is all done
by this microsoft program.
