    Exclamation "Windows has detected spyware infection!" Balloon popup

    Hi,

    I've seen other people on this forum who have the same problem. My norton utilites icon on the task manager has a rex X and a ballon pops up with a message: "Windows has detected spyware infection!" The default page of my IE browser is set to google and if I search for anything something and if I click on it a popup tries to occur. This malware is terrilble it appears to block my access to certain websites where I can download anti-malware software. Plus I'm member on bleepingcomputer forum and geekstogo. The malware is blocking my access to those websites. I need help is there anyone out there that can help me

    If you can't download programs listed below, from infected computer, download them on another computer, and transfer them to infected computer (CD, flash drive, etc.)

    Print these instructions out.

    1. Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
    http://www.superantispyware.com/

    * Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
    * Close SUPERAntiSpyware.

    PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET

    Restart computer in Safe Mode.
    To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; select Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

    * Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
    * Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
    * Under [b]General and Startup" tab, make sure, Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts option is UN-checked.
    * Click the Scanning Control tab.
    * Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    - Close browsers before scanning.
    - Scan for tracking cookies.
    - Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

    * Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
    * Back on the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
    * On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    * On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
    * Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    * After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK.
    * Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click Next.
    * A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then click the Finish button to return to the main menu.
    * If asked if you want to reboot, click Yes.
    * To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    - Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    - Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    - If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    - Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.

    * Click Close to exit the program.
    Post SUPERAntiSpyware log.
    NOTE: Tracking cookies can be omitted from the log.

    RECONNECT TO THE INTERNET

    RESTART COMPUTER!

    2. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php to your desktop.
    (Malwarebytes is free to use as a manual scanner. Payment is only required if you wish to have it run and update automatically which is not necessary for our purposes)

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
    * Post the log back here.

    RESTART COMPUTER!

    3. Download, install, and run HijackThis:
    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
    Post HijackThis log.
    Do NOT attempt to "fix" anything!


    DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    I have downloaded the executibles-install files onto a flashdrive for both SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes. SupreAntiSpyware executible will not inistialize on the infected computer. Malwarebytes will install and initialize on the infected machine, but it cannot access the Malwarebytes website for updates. Second when I reboot into safe mode the computer hangs or stalls. Please tell me what to do I need Help!!!!!

    Run the Malwarebytes program without the updates if you need to. Are you able to download and run hijackthis?

    I can run the Malwarebytes program. I downloaded Hijackthis and installed it, however it will not execute. I think the Malware is preventing me from executing it. What do you want me to do with the Malwarebytes program and what about the SuperAntiSpy program?

    First, run malwarbtyes and let if fix what it can, reboot as per instructions above. Then try to run superantispyware and then hijackthis. Let us have a look at all the logfiles generated. (do not attempt to repair anything with hijackthis until given instructions)

    Hi Fink,

    Hi Fink,

    After rebooting, there is some improvement. The red X has disappeared and the norton 360 icon with the green check is back. I could not initialize the SuperAntiSpyware.exe nor could I access the website. However I was able to run Hijackthis and here is the log listed below.

    Try to get into Safe Mode and install and run SuperAntiSpyware.

    I suggest shutting down, wait at least 30 seconds, then boot up and try to get into Safe Mode.

    Hi Train,

    I followed your instructions. I shut down for more than thirty seconds rebooted in Safe mode, it worked. During initialization in Safe mode it asked me if I want to restore to an earlier point before this whole mess happen I said no and continued to follow your instructions. I tried to initialize the SuperantiSpyware executible and it gave me an error message. I tried to access the http://www.superantispyware.com/ website and it still will not let me. What should I do now???

    In Safe Mode you can not access the internet.
    Safe mode with networking, you should be able to, but remember with that, You have not protection at all!

    Train,

    I was way ahead of you I used safe mode with networking. I was able to access other websites such as this one and the nytimes, but not that SuperAntiSpyware website. I think that malware is still preventing me from accessing it. In the meantime I ran Norton 360 antivirus scan and it found a worm W32.Savix. It's requesting that I reboot the machine so it can remove it. I do not know if this will do it. Please let me know what I should do.

    If you've already run Norton and it's requesting a reboot you should do it but it would have been best to follow the instructions and not try to use any other a/v or antispyware programs until instructed.

    Hopefully the reboot won't further complicate things. Do tell us what happens after you reboot. Do wait for further instructions.

    So far it's still the same I'll strongly follow your instructions. I can't access the SuperAntiSpyware site, the Malwarebytes site. Plus when I google anything it will try to lead me to something different. Now for some reason the Malwarebytes program will not initialize, but Hijackthis does initialize without anyproblems. Please tell me what to do I'll follow your intructions and do nothing else.
