Yup...it was my first also. When registering for VDr it asked me to come up with a username. I hadn't the foggiest idea of what to use. I had spent a great evening out with some friends at a bistro in DC the night before, so "bistro" came to mind. I didn't think I would be on the site on a regular basis, so that's the rather funky name I chose. I didn't bother to read the fine print at the bottom of the page that VDr can be addicting, so I fell into it's evil trap and have been held captive ever since (I tried chewing my leg off, but it didn't work).

It was the first forum I joined too...

T'was about a year into my new career as an IT support tech for dial up internet (anyone remember that?), and I was challenged with a modem that just would not work... hence the name! In the end after about 2 month I fixed the customers problem... drivers for win'95 which I d'loaded and copied to floppy and sent via snail mail to the customer.. those were the days.

I'm sure a few will remember me going beserk a few years ago but a certain Super Spark and that big man Big John (RIP) and gave me a second chance to stay here.. and here I still am (now and again).

Today Techallenged is a more appropriate name as I need more help than I can give (new career and all)... but I'll keep trying

    Long Live VDR

I too was a VDR newbie. I joined because a friend recommended VDR to get help with a computer problem I was having. These guys, helped me build from scratch my first PC, what a feeling that was.

Look at me now! VDR is the best of the best for sure!!

    Hi hambone2,
I'm sure there is a story behind your posting name, equal or maybe even better than bistro's. I first signed up with "No Wonder" message board in 1998 - new computer with Win98 and IE (ooh, ah), new to internet. No Wonder was great, then it became "EPeople" (ugh) VDR is great, good people. I have found that you can ask what-you-might-think-are-stupid-and-may-be-a-little-embarrassed-to-ask-them questions and receive reasoned, respectful, useful advice. I look forward to your future posts.

    Talking

Yeah, at the time, a friend of mine who worked at Support at Convergys told me about this site...and I signed up for computer help. That's how I found out about it.

Remember the Yellow/Peach color to it? lol

I've belonged to so many message boards I can't remember them all. Some are long gone some are still going ... now there are only 5 that I frequent and this is one of them. What's the saying ... cream rises to the top

I hate to admit it, but my first tech board was the help boards at Iwon.com and I also joined freewebs or something like that.

I learned a lot at the tech board on Iwon and several of the helpers vanished and I didn't know where they went but someone said they moved to vdr.

The freeweb access site we talked aobut all the free accesses and learned how, which ones were available, the pitfalls of them ect, till the free access all went down. As well as computer help, fighting the baddies as they were then.

Then I moved here and a couple of other tech forums

This forum was also my first forum to join, back in 1998. My user name was Skyraider but I never posted because I was so new to computers that I felt that I had absolutely nothing to offer...and everything to learn.

In the beginning, I was spending many hours at a Microsoft help forum, reading and learning, and one day one of the posters mentioned this site and I checked it out..and never left. I was out of action for a couple of years and didn't remain active so I had to start over with a user name.

Almost everything that I have learned I have learned from here...and I'm still a neophyte compared to so many others here.

Back in THOSE days, that would have been considered spam. lol. (Mentioning a website on another website that is). Amazing how things have changed.

Actually, this web board wasn't my first TECH board...but just my "First Web Board In General EVER!" :-)
