[RESOLVED] DVD driver problems
Hi,
Ever since i got a vista over a year ago i have not been able to get my DVD player to work. Now I’ve managed without it until now when i realised i need one to install a game.
Strange thing is that i know the drive must be plugged in and working fine it's self as it works when you use a bootable cd like windows. But it doesn't even appear as a drive when i load vista. I have tried to install the drivers off the Sony website and they won't work as 'target device is not found correctly'. When i go into device manager is shows there is a problem but when i tell it to update the drivers it says the best ones are already installed, which also seems odd considering I’ve never been able to install any!
This is starting to drive me crazy now, how hard can it be to get a DVD drive to work!
Any help is appreciated,
Thanks John

If applicable,
Double check jumper settings of the drive in question as well as any other drive if sharing the same data cable.
Double check CMOS/BIOS menu for any applicable options.
Cheers.

Optical drives don't need any extra drivers since Win 2000.
Try one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on downloaded file, and allow registry merge.
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Ah ha! Genius!
Well i did the easiest thing first which was to restore the missing CD drive registry stuff, and after a restart it now works perfectly.
Thanks very much guys, much appreciated.
