Laptop Speed low. Not able to access any website through any browser

Hello,

Can anyone please help me out.
I am not able to connect to the internet through broadband cable connection, through any browser and not even able to log in to any messenger(gtalk, yahoo).
Also the speed of my laptop is very low, it has 512 Mb Ram.
