Remotely shutting down a networked machine?

Hi all,

The kid's machine is connected to the internet via Internet Connection sharing through a NIC. I have full access to their files and at the same token they have no access to mine. Works very well.

I'm wondering if there is a way to control their machine from mine, iow is there a way to activate shutdown from my machine?

I thought that creating a shutdown shortcut on the desktop and clicking on the shortcut from C:/windows/desktop folder of the kids machine through my machine would shut it down, but shuts off my machine instead.

Any ideas?

If I can do this, it will be a good way to say, "time for bed, and I mean NOW!

Make it on their machine , might have to make a batch file to shut down a ID ed machine though.

Put it where you want to. When it is time, browse to it, shut it down.

What I did do was create a shortcut in the kids machine with the C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE User,ExitWindows command,

Browsing to that shortcut will shut down my machine, not theirs.

It looks like I need to create a batch file to run the command to the targeted machine like train says. Any tips on how to get a command to point to target machine?

I tried a little more thinking, trial and error.

On my machine I created a new shortcut on my desktop and browsed to the Rundll32 command of the kids machine through the network neighborhood, the result was a path pointing to the networked machine.

For example, my machine's path is C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE User,ExitWindows

the kid's machine's path is \\Kids\c\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE User,ExitWindows

This shortcut will not shutdown my machine, but will not shut theirs down either. I wonder if it is because the Start in field is blank.

Gonna try a few more trial and errors to see if I can get this to work. if it will at all.

yes, but does this shutdown program work from another 98 client. Most programs that I have seen they have to be windows 2000 or a NT to shutdown another computer.

I am interested to see the results.

Hi all.

Just popped in to let all know I'm trying out ZOTS link he sent.

I spent a few minutes trying to work with it and currently does not work, I need to reread the .txt file and see what I'm doing wrong.

Weekends are a tough time for me to get free time with family and all, last night I did a format/install for a good freind's Compaq Presario 5304. Geez I was surprised to see how many corners Compaq cut in making their machines. ( for example I brought over a spare HD I loaded with Compaq's updated drivers I downloaded from my machine with this HD connected as a slave, little did I know the Compaq did not have slave connectors on their cable and had to figure out a way to connect the drive in place of the CDROM and make the HD master when I left the jumper at home and hours drive away. &lt;looks around in room&gt; ummm don't tell anyone...&lt;whispers&gt; I ended up bending the pins together to jump the pins.
Anyway, the process of backing up his data in spare HD, Fdisking and creating multi partitions, formatting, installing OS and programs and transferring data from Spare HD to extended drive took an excess of 6 hours.

Was worth an offer of chinese food and .... uhh...I don't know how many beers...
