After running this I got the message that Windows was unable to repair all corrupted files. Details in CBS logs. I could not open the files but was able to send them to zip folder. They are attached. Can somebody please look at them and advise what to do next?. I think the files were corrupted by a failed attempt to install SP1, ( after I uninstalled SigmaTel driver, disabled non-Microsoft services and all startups). I think that because a day before I ran this scan and all files were OK.

SpywareDr - This is the only zip I could get, no matter what I tried. Taking ownership, Folder Options already set to reveal hidden files, getting CBS file through search then running it as administrator, the result was always this aneamic folder. I did Get a good zip of CBS persist - attached for what it is worth.
Train - the article covers Windows XP, and requires a Windows CD. The only CD I received from Dell is called "Operating System". It says to use this only to reinstall the OS. Will it have a Repair function or just get me to factory condition?.
Broni - I have Eset Smart Security which normally works perfectly. At some point something went wrong somewhere and manual AV scan stopped at around 70%. I tried some suggestions from the ESS tech which did not help, so I cowardly reverted to previous image and found that the did not work at all. I then went back to an older Acronis image and everything worked. I then saw a comment by one of the moderators on an unrelated subject that said if corruption of system files is suspected run sfc /scannow. After I did that ESS started running perfectly, no scanning problems. I then attempted to install SP1 once again and failed. I then ran sfc / scannow once again suspecting that SP1 screwed up my system files, and it did. I am once again operating on an older Acronis image and every thing seems OK but for the sfc warning that some file could not be kepaired. It gave a link to the CBS log file.

Now you know why we prefer a regular M$ OS cd/dvd to those restore type cd/dvds. I concider it worth while to buy the OS so i can do the repairs and the like instead of having my hdd wiped, thus losing everything, and the factory clone put back one the hdd.

I would also prefer to have a proper OS DVD/CD but even the New Egg price is more than I am willing to pay for Vista. I already bought XP OS retail for the same reason and used it about twice.
My next computer is going to arrive minus OS and all the other garbage box manufacturers feel like putting on it. Thank you for your help. If I have to go back to factory condition then that's what I will have to do.

Thank you Broni. Good links. I downloaded the image as instructed, burned it to DVD and verified it. Computer would not boot from the DVD. When I tried to enter Settings (F2 on boot) to change the boot sequence all I got was a grey screen. When I tried to boot from the boot menu (F12) i discovered that boot preference was hard disk, but there was an option to boot from CD/DVD. I took that option and got a BSOD. A re check with sfc /scannow, before I tried the Vista Recovery Disk still shown some corrupted files.
I have a few C images to go back to, but they are all from the last five weeks. I will try to go to the oldest I have and see if it is OK. If so it will be far less work than re-installing all the programs I have.
