A solution of sorts:
It appears as though a virus or some other malware corrupted the computer and keyboard, such that the alt and windows keys are reversed. When I hit alt, I was getting the windows functions. E.g., I had a macro requiring alt+t. However, when I hit alt+t, I was taken to the tools icon. Similarly, alt+d, instead of inserting today's day, took me to the desktop. However, if I used windows+d, I got the date inserted, which was what I wanted, and if I hit windows+t, I got the time inserted, which was what I wanted.
Each macro now works, but I have to hit windows+(key) to get the macro to run from the keyboard.
Could not locate the virus or malware which probably caused the problem. Ran BitDefender, Spybot, Hijack this and others. Could not locate the bad guy, but I can live with the solution.
Thanks to those who contributed.
