    Problems installing Adbe Reader 9

    Hi all

    I've uninstalled my previous version of Adobe Reader (8.1.2 I think) and tried to install version 9.
    It gets so far and then I get a message that Adobe installer is unable to write to registry key "\AcroExch.FDFDoc\shell\read\command"

    I've CCleaner to ensure no lingering (bits) of old installations and it's coming up clear.

    Anyone any ideas on how to get round this?

    richardmgreen--This is not going to be a very helpful reply.
    I went to the Adobe Reader 9 download site
    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
    and was pretty disappointed.
    First, Adobe tries to sneak in a download of eBay Desktop. (You can opt out if you spot it.)
    Second, I have a suspicion that the main difference between Reader 9 and Reader 8 is the addition of Adobe.com. (Reader 9's download is 33MB whereas Reader 8's download is 21MB.) Adobe.com is BETA and I am underwhelmed by what Adobe.com can do. I wonder if the installation permits choosing not to install Adobe.com.
    So thanks to you for the heads up about Reader 9, but I do not think I will not be installing Reader 9 in the short term. And therefore I cannot help you other than suggest that you be sure your Antivirus program (and probably all other programs) are not running when you install.
    I see you uninstalled your earlier version of Reader before installing Reader 9. That was a good idea even if Adobe makes no recommendation on the subject.

    What operating system, and how are you trying to install it - from a download to your desktop, or installing while online? You're best off doing the install from a downloaded file, so there's no chance of getting a corrupted file on the fly. Try installing from the administrator user account too.

    lgbpop--That was another negative. The Adobe Reader 9 site in fact only offers to Install, not Download.

    It's sitting on my desktop as I write this. It's about a two-minute download with broadband. Strongly recommended over an online install, as I said.

    I'll see if I can duplicate that problem richardmgreen experienced.

    Well, it installed OK without a problem. There are two other apps included that seem to be completely unnecessary - Acrobat.com and AcrobatAir - but they uninstall easily. This was on XP Home with SP3.

    I'd try the download route, and make sure you have admin permissions.

    Leave that crap (Adobe Reader) alone, and get FoxIt: http://www.filehippo.com/download_foxit/
    Does same thing, it's much smaller, faster, and trouble free.

    OK - installed Foxit as a temporary measure but would love to find out why I can't install Adobe.
    I got the downloaded file by using Firefox not IE.

    Just had another go after running "1-Click Maintenance" and the Registry Cleaner from Tune-Up Utilities.
    Now I've got a different error that says :-
    \.fdf\AcroExch.FDFDoc\ShellNew. (and then a few spaces)
    If I click on Ignore, I get :-
    Unable to create key UNKNOWN\.fdf.

    Anyone any ideas?

    P.S. I've had a wander through the registry without deleting anything and there still seems to be a load of Adobe stuff (I do have Photoshop installed), but there seems to be too much for just that.

    Sorry to say this, but if you run junk programs like this you're going to get results like that. "Clean-up" and "optimizer" utilities are unnecessary at best, and harmful most of the time.

    richardmgreen--The laugh is on both of us. I can download the file (yes, I found some sites) but I cannot install. I go to 99.9% of the new Install procedure and the install window just closes--nothing more, not even a message.
    But others are having the same problem. See Ronald Schrieber's post here

    Fortunately, I was able to reinstall Reader 8.1.2.
