[64] Two dead Vista Computers after last Vista release

Following the latest Vista SP1 update release, two different Vista computers have locked up and now neither computer will boot up.

Here is a thread about the problem but VDR is where the experts and the answers are.

Any guidance on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Linda

Having Vista's SP1 to install without a hitch is simply luck of the draw unfortunately. The latest version of SP1, at least to my understanding, actually installs a prerequisite update and it's that update that appears to be screwing up people's comps. People have reported success starting from scratch and installing SP1 onto a fresh install of Vista (before adding any other apps).

edit: I did some more reading and supposedly M$ pulled that prerequisite update, so that blows my "theory" out of the water. I assume you already tried Safe Mode?
Seems like M$ updates do more to damage systems than to help them. I had a failed Vista update yesterday and the system would not boot at all. Had to do a restore with Acronis last night.

Hmm.......OK a quick look and I see a fix for XP issued by HP so maybe just maybe it may work on Vista
Microsoft Windows XP Intelide.sys Fix for ICH5 Drive Swapping Lockup Issue

This package installs a fix for an issue under Microsoft Windows XP on a computer with an Intel ICH5 southbridge. The driver that is used for the IDE controller may be the generic Pciide.sys driver instead of the correct Intelide.sys driver. If the computer has hot-swappable drive bays, the computer may stop responding (lock up) when you swap between two ultra DMA devices. This occurs because Pciide.sys does not support this type of swapping.
For more information about this issue, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base article 322359, ''Intelide.sys Is Not Used on Computers with ICH4 or ICH5.''
I take it your error message is the same or similar?
