I've been trying to solve a home network issue. Sorry if this is a little convoluted.

The internet connection is through a Motorola DSL modem. The connection works. When I connect the modem to a WRT54g wireless router's internet port, I cannot connect to the internet. When I connect the modem to one of the other four ports, the connection works. Unless I have a second computer on the network, then there is an IP address conflict.

The Modem is using DHCP to assign the same IP to both computers. What settings do I need to use to connect multiple computers?

Your Modem serves Dynamically-assigned IP addresses by default. Be sure to configure each computer
connected to your Modem to accept a Dynamically-assigned IP address, commonly referred to as DHCP.

Disable DHCP in the router. That should take care of it.

As it is possible that you do not have everything set up properly lets start with the basics:
1. The DSL connection from the wall goes into the modem.
2. The Modem then connects into the data port all the way on the left (when looking from behind)
3. Next run another cable from your computers ethernet card to any of the other ports on your router.

If you have configured your DSL modem and Router correctly it should all work.
Check with your DSL provider's web site to see if they have any instructions on how to set up a wireless router. Verizon has it and I am sure others do too.

Also check the linksys web site as they have instructions for setting up the router.

DHCP is enabled on all computers on the network. The problem occurs because the DHCP server on the modem assigns them all the same IP (192.168.1.64). The modem I have looks exactly like the one in the picture, but the menus are completely different, like AT&T redid them.

When I disable DHCP on the router I still can only get one computer online at a time.

I get stuck on step 5, I can't get the router screen to appear in the browser, it just keeps loading forever. I know everything else is right, because my IP is 192.168.2.100 and I can ping the router at 192.168.2.1.

Wiring is from the wall to the modem, modem's ethernet jack to the router's internet jack, router's data jack (1 of 4) to the PC.

I know the connection works because I'm using it now. If I connect the modem to one of the data jacks I can connect.

I had the same problem with Verizon in that the instructions they had for the modem did not match the screen I was seeing. Go to the Motorola site and look at what they have for your make and model modem.

I have things working now using manual IPs, with the router acting as a switch. It works for now. Thanks for the help.
