slowing down your internet connection

Does anyone know how I can manage my internet connection? Is there a piece of software out there that will allow me to slow down my connection or speed it up?

Not sure why you would want toslow your connection down or by how much but this ought to do it. Follow these buttons:

Start/Control Panel/network Connections/Properties/Configure/Link Speed & Duplex

Then change it from Auto Detect or 100Mbs/Full Duplex which ever yours is at to this:
10Mbs/Full Duplex
or
10Mbs/half Duplex

Note one of these might not work for you depending what type of Network card you have. Obviously Hlf Duplex is slower but some Network Cards do not support ir handle it very well. So you would have to use the above Full Duplex instead if your internet connection is not working after selecting half Duplex.

This will slow you down a bit. I am not sure what exactly you are trying to do though. Give more info please if this does not seem like what you are wanting.

It is possible to make your internet connection appear faster some of the time. This is done by means of a program which predicts what you may wish to do next. eg if you are reading a page and there is a link on that page the program starts to download the data from that link and hold it in a cache before you click the link, so that when you do click it the data appears to be there instantly. One such program comes from Earthlink

However often a lot of unnecessary data is downloaded, stuff that you don't want, and it adds to your total traffic and could cause your download bill to increase.

It is also possible to slow your connection, this is not normally required with a conventional internet connection as the darn thing is too slow already, but with a network where many large files are transfered, sometimes it is necessary to do this to allow other users some of the networks bandwidth. The previous poster has mentioned something which could be done, although this would be a rather unconventional method, which would introduce other problems. However there are programs which are used to throttle a download by introducing a delay between the packets requested. This gives some time for other users to get some of their data thru during this small delay.

Public wireless links often use this so as to share the bandwidth. One vendor is Netequalizer. To find more information go to any search engine and search for Bandwidth Throttle. BF

You wouldn't use NetEqualizer for a home network, though. It's designed for networks with multiple users (schools, offices, etc).
