XP Windows Media Center - No Defender or IE-7
Friend from out of town has contacted me re problems he is having after setting up a refurbished Gateway. He took all the extra crap off and said computer runs just fine. When he got the critical updates SP3 was the first one up so he installed it. All went well it seemed. Also installed Windows Defender with no problems but it won't update; uninstalled and installed it three times but to no avail...still will not update. Also tried several times to upgrade IE6 to IE7 but after a few seconds it just throws up a message that it's not able to perform the update.
I frankly do not know where to tell him to start.
Anybody got any ideas?
Gateway GT5014 with XP Windows Media Center 2005
2.8 Pentium D with 3 GB RAM
Thanks...

Did he install all other updates, or just SP3?

Error on Windows Defender was 0x80004002. No error number on the IE-7 update failure.
I'm waiting for further info re service packs...

May just have to try several times.
Interesting thread on that error with several possible fixes.

SP-2 was installed upon receipt of "refurbished" computer, Train.
Owner of computer said other than the IE-7 and Defender problem the computer seems to run fine.
He advised thanks for our efforts but to tell the members of this forum that he was going to say the heck with it and just use Firefox and would use other antispyware and not worry about Windows Defender.
Guess we can mark this thread as cancelled or resolved - however it should be phrased.
Thanks...

Xp with IE 6 and Firefox is a good move in my book.
IE 7 was designed for Vista and for some of us, it just messes up in XP.
