Hi Elaine, I knew a number of them, the cat gut one intrigued me as a child and my mother calmed me down by explaining it. I have a friend who grows Kiwi Fruit commercially, if you have never tried it do yourself a favour, mix with a good sparkling wine (not that overpriced French ) and you are in heaven.

The "black box" is actually red.

I wonder how the recorders got the black box handle when they've never been black? That must be a generic term for electronic devices.

How Black Boxes Work
http://travel.howstuffworks.com/black-box.htm/printable
After a Crash
Although they are called "black boxes," aviation recorders are actually painted bright orange. This distinct color, along with the strips of reflective tape attached to the recorders' exteriors, help investigators locate the black boxes following an accident. These are especially helpful when a plane lands in the water. There are two possible origins of the term "black box": Some believe it is because early recorders were painted black, while others think it refers to the charring that occurs in post-accident fires.

Hi the term "black box" refers to the science of black magic ie what went on in there was a mystery to most people so a generic term was created. The first boxes were painted Red then latter bright Orange
