Resolved [RESOLVED] Ctrl+S does not appear to be working

    Using XP and Word 2003.

I hate to type, and really, really hate to re-type. I set my automatic save for maximum protection, with:
    Always create backup copy.
    Allow background saves.
Save autorecover info every 1 minute.

Then as I am typing, every paragraph or so, I will do a Ctrl+S.

To test whether Ctrl+S was working, I typed a line, did a Ctrl+S, and did a forced shutdown of the computer. When I rebooted, the line I had typed immediately before doing the Ctrl+S was not there. I opened the backup file and each of the tmp files and neither showed the last line that I type, before doing the Ctrl+S. For that reason, I concluded that Ctrl+S is not working.

The Backup file probably put me within 1 minute of the forced shutdown.

    Why is Ctrl+S not working?

    Why is Ctrl+S not working?

Cause it's broken or has been changed?

Deleting the default template called Normal.dot might fix it...Note that if you have modified your current template you'll lose the settings.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

    Steve:

I have no doubt that I have made some changes, though not intended, to the default template. The last time(s) I had a crash/blue screen, and had to recover work that I was working on, I got several messages asking if I wanted to replace the normal, etc. I am not sure how, or why I answered the way I did. My concern at the time was to recover my lost work and I did not care about the normal template, or whatever.

How do I now make this right? I want Ctrl+S to work.

Can search for the file and zap it...It'll get receated next time you open Word.

Who or what can search for the file and delete it?

Are you telling me to delete the Normal.doc and close Word?

Documents and Settings\Your_Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates is the usual directory. And its normal.dot, not normal.doc

This is what I did, and why.

I could not figure out what you guys were telling me to do. I was too embarrassed to continue asking you to explain what might be something simple. So, I did the following.

To my knowledge, all of the other features of Normal.dot were functioning properly. It was only Ctrl+S which was not working. So, I created a macro, called save now, which I saved to Normal.dot and gave this macro the key strokes of Ctrl+S.

Tested it by typing. Did a forced shutdown. Rebooted and found the last word I had typed before I hit ctrl+S. Voila! It is working.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
