Acrobat Reader Vulnerabilities
CERT Technical Cyber Security Alert TA08-043A
If you are using
* Adobe Reader version 8.1.1 and earlier and/or
* Adobe Acrobat Professional, 3D, and Standard versions 8.1.1 and earlier
you should read http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/techalerts/TA08-043A.html
At least one of the reported vulnerabilities is actively being exploited. Since most browsers are set to automatically load and open PDF files many users are exposed. The techalert explains how to protect yourself.

jerryctx--I do not know if it cures the problems you mention, but in just the last few days Adobe Reader has come out with an update to v8.1.2.
You get it here http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
P.S. The link you provide http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/techalerts/TA08-043A.html%3E does not seem to be working at the moment.

The link has been fixed. Sorry about that.
V8.1.2 corrects the problems (as noted in the advisory which you could not read ). There are other precautions that may be of interest.
Thanks for the info.
