Angry Class installer has denied the request to upgrade or install this device

I've spent 8 hours trying to install either of 2 different scanners on my XP home system - an HP3500c and a Canon LiDE30.

I get the class installer error message after installing the drivers and when I plug in the USB connector to the scanner.

At first I thought it was a problem with the HP unit, so I took it back and decided to try the Canon, but got the same result. I spent an hour on the phone with HP tech support before returning the first unit - we tried installing in safe mode, upgrading to SP1, running virus scanners, and deleting all non-essential items from the Enum/USB section of the registry - none of which helped.

When the Canon unit install failed with the same error, I decided it must be an XP problem, so I tried their new online Chat support service, but they ended up referring me to the phone support. I spent another hour and a half on the phone with them, without positive results - they have now referred it to their research team. I can't believe I'm the only one to have run into this frustrating issue.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions (other than formatting my hard drive).

Have you done an on-line virus scan of the system? Klez & BugBear can both cause this symptom, and can prevent your own anti-virus from detecting them.

    Yes and Yes.

I've now run TrendMicro HouseCall (PC-illin) and McAfee's online scanning service. I've also downloaded and run Symnatec's Klez.h and Bugbear virus killer apps and searched for wink* in the registry - all with no result.

I've also checked that I am indeed the Administrator, and when booting in safe mode to try installing from there, that's what I log in as.

Microsoft is actually being very supportive on this issue. I have an appointment for a telephone call with one of their research team people on Wednesday to see if we can sort this out. It's going to be very embarrasing if I've done something dumb, but so far three tech support guys have failed to come up with an answer that works.

I have experienced exactly the same behaviour while trying to install a Canon Ixus Camera via USB under XP Pro. Please post any solution that you find.

    Good luck

    Wink Class installer problem

I had the same class installer issue listed above with both of my printers. I disconnected all the other USB cables and reinstalled my Lexmark x73 with no problems.
I have a belkin USB adapter for an old palm pilot. I think this was giving XP problems recognizing the new hardware. Everything works fine now.
    Good Luck!

    We tried that too.

My Microsoft technician had me roll back to pre-SP1 and try loading a restore point before all this got started, but it didn't help - actually the restore points wouldn't load.

She believes my registry is corrupted, and has requested that I re-install windows. As she tells me this will require my programs to be re-installed afterward, you can imagine that I'm a little hesitant. Quite apart from anything else, it will take at least half a day of my time to get the system back to where I need it to be, and that's assuming all goes well. However, if no one else has any bright ideas, do I have any choice?

This is a very long shot but worth trying before re-installing the OS. Download the free trial anti-Trojan program from this site:

    http://www.atshield.com/index.php?razdel=download

Scan your system. Not all Trojans are considered viruses and a-v programs don't check for all of them.

Lightbulb I have the same problem!

I have the same problem with my HP Scanjet 3570c (Which Windows recognizes it as 3500c)

I tried hard to resolve the problem, but it was no use! However, I noticed several issues:

    - The problem does not seem to be related to USB support, I'm sure that both my system and my Windows XP fully support USB 2.0. I downloaded and installed the latest drviers for USB 2.0, but nothing gone better.
    - I uninstalled the scanning software provided by HP and then tried to re-install the driver, surprisingly everything worked and Windows installed the driver successfully!! Then I re-installed the scanning software and it worked too! (All functionalities worked successfully) But the bad news is as soon as I restarted my system, the exclamation mark appeared again and eveything went malfunctionning again (( Is it true with your system too?
    - Both Norton AntiVisus and McAfee did not find any viruses in my system.

Anyway, my system specifications are as follows, (please check for any similarities with yours):

    - CPU: Intel Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz, 533 MHz Bus speed
    - Mother board: SuperMicro P4SGA with on-board sound/graphics/LAN
    - Memory: 512 MBs RAM (DDR 266 MHz)
    - Hard disk: Seagate 80 GBs
    - Graphics card: ATI Radeon 9000 PRO
    - Sound card: Zoltrix Pro-6 - 6-channel output
    - DVD-ROM drive: Pioneer 16x
    - CD-RW drive: Sony 8x/4x/32x
    - Fax/Modem: US-Robotics 56k External, Serial
    - Printer: HP Laserjet 1200 USB/Parallel
    - Scanner: HP Scanjet 3570c USB
    - Monitor: LG Flatron 795FT Plus + 4-channel USB hub
    - Mouse: A4-Tech wireless optical mouse
    - Multimedia keyboard
    - OS: Microsoft Windows XP Build 2600.xpsp1.020828-1920: Service Pack 1

Please inform me should you achieve any progress...

OK - I tried atshield, and it claimed to have found a trojan virus in an old powetoy.exe file, and in also in the latest Canon drivers SetupSG.exe file I downloaded from the Canon website!

However, removing them didn't help. I decided to try the XP re-install instead, but after nearly an hour that failed with 'Install failed' error at the very end when I logged in, and it took me several hours to get all my programs running again.

I could try a 'clean install', but it really isn't worth the hassle - everything else is working OK. I typically rebuild my system annually, so it can wait until then.

The scanner has now gone back to Best Buy. Maybe someone can suggest a scanner that works on a totally different basis?

    BTW I have the following:

Athlon 1700+ with a SOYO Dragon Plus m'board
    GeForce4 MX440 64 Meg
    512 Meg RAM
    60Gig Maxtor HD
    StudioDC10 PLus Video capture card
    Built in LAN connector
My CD-RW is on RMA at the moment so I'm using my DVD drive as my CD drive
I also have an Ezonics USB EZcam II, but that's disconnected right now. Re-installing it is my next project....

Angry HP Scanjet 3300C Installation Problem

I have had this same problem and have spent hours trying to install my scanner. It must be an XP problem because my scanner works fine off
Windows 98. I've installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, downloaded and installed "fixes", ordered an upgraded CD (v. 3.02), tried installing and it STILL WON"T RECOGNIZE THE SCANNER!!! Frustration pervails!

Well in my mind it does say that it cant be the devices, if all different ones are affected. This includes me & my webcam, however one difference is my webcam has been installed for a long time & now suddenly theres a problem. So what does that tell you Microsoft?
