Need Zip Freeware Software recommendations
I have been using WinZip on an infrequent basis and just discovered that my eval copy has expired.
Is there a program of equal quality that is freeware that you would recommend.
Would you please provide an URL for any product that you are recommending?
Normally, I don't mind paying for the software that I use but I just don't use a zip program that often. Unfortunately, I have spent the past two days trying to forward a PowerPoint file to an associate. The file is only 2.8 MB but ATT will start the transfer and then break the connection, midway through the process.
I have even tried to go to yahoo.com and to send it from there, except "Norton the wonderful" never completes the scan process after 45 minutes.
I have opened the file and there isn't any problem with the file. I am running Kaspersky Internet Security and when I received the file, KIS did not have a problem with the email or the attachment.
I think that this is more ATT nonsense. I was listening to my ATT Call Notes, when ATT locked my box for 2 hours.
Yuk, Yuk.
I really wish that ATT had some tough competition.
Thanks in Advance,
Linda

Linda: XP and Vista both have decent zip capabilities already built in. I use them unless it's something like opening a RAR or such. Then I use free 7-Zip http://www.7-zip.org/ 7-Zip is pretty basic but always gets the job done when Windows can't...

FYI - .pps files don't compress very much. I just compressed a 2036kb file..It only went to 1920kb ....
If your using XP, uninstalling Winzip will probably bring back XP's compress function..
If you're using Win2k, I still have a copy of the free winzip version 8.1 from 2002 I could email you.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

Steve,
Yes, I am using W2K. I would very much appreciate it, if you would email me a copy of WinZip version 0.1.
Do have any idea why neither ATT or Yahoo.com would send the email message with the PPT extension? The file was only 2.8 MB.
Thanks,
Linda
Thanks,
Linda

Doc's link ( WinZip 8.1 (1.7 MB) would be as good if not better. My file is an .exe and might get filtered out.

To e-mail .ppt or .exe files, try simply renaming them by changing the extension to .zip or .txt. Make sure to let the recipient know what to change them back to. ALso, some e-mail providers have a 2MB limit on attachments.
