Resolved [RESOLVED] [Pro] Changed motherboard; access & permission problems

I finally switched my daughter's old A7A133 for the very nice NF7-S.

I was expecting to have to do a repair install at the very least...which I still might have to do...but at the moment all is "almost" good-to-go.

Except....now all of the programs at Desktop are blocked...access is denied...I don't have appropriate permissions to access items....?

I first went into the Bios and cleared the password setting not knowing if that may be it...it wasn't. ( I bought this board from someone...got a great deal on board/ram/cpu/hsf combo )

I can go to the properties\shortcut\advanced\run with different credentials...of each program and get it done that way....but there must be a simple fix for this.

What is that command...can't remember it correctly...'clearusername'...or something like that?

Also...probably connected to this...there are no icons in the system tray...because they are not authorized yet?

I tried to access the 'security' category in control panel but I'm locked out there...tried to access 'set program access and defaults' in the 'start menu'...locked out also.

As I first stated...I'm a little surprised that I was able to even get this far without doing a repair or re-install.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas....

Steve...I read the article and it appears that what I was doing by going to each folder and changing the credentials choice is about the same thing...

I am getting a few minutes here at work to check in here...will pursue this after I get home tonite...

I am not allowed to shutdown or re-start...?? How do I take ownership of that function?

I would like to just eliminate the access and permission aspect altogether..this is just a home computer that just I and my daughter use.

Did you create a new limited profile for your daughter?

Steve...No, there is no profile or anything for my daughter. There is no need to have anything like that..we just do basic surfing, e-mail, ..etc.( she is 28...no need for any parental controls or anything like that.)

I just gave the computer to her after I re-built and upgraded my old Socket A.

Until this different board, there was no problem...don't know how changing boards messed up the access rights.

I could probably do either a repair install or even a fresh format & clean install but if this minor problem can be worked out that would be fine.

The anti-virus, spywareBlaster, other stuff can access the web to get updates so that part is fine...but I haven't been able to log onto internet using the msn or internet explorer icons on desktop, even though I changed the credentials and signed in as administrator.

The only two names are my own personal name, and administrator.

I went in under administrator tools and tried adding my name tothe list of anything that looked like it had to do with accessing programs..especially being able to shutdown/re-start...but I still get blocked out from desktop programs until I change credentials...and they don't "stick" when I shutdown or re-start...weird.

I feel that this is a minor thing that we haven't hit upon the right 'fix' for...

It's REAL SLOW here at the shop so far...so I'll try and check back when I can.

    Thanks..

    Okay...I'm home.

    1.computer boots normally
    2. Welcome screen with my name as the only choice ( can shutdown or re-start from this screen but not from desktop.
    3. I click my name...it loads my personal settings, etc...and it goes directly to desktop...and rather quickly, too.!
4.But it still denies me access until I choose to change user and run as administrator. For instance, the anti-virus, Everest...etc.
    5. I am connected to internet...anti-virus, spywareblaster, etc, can get updates....but I cannot get online with MSN. It asks me for email addy & password but says not connected...maybe some drivers that need loading?
    6. No icons in system tray....Anti-virus appears after I sign in under admin, but doesn't stay there if I re-boot...
7.How can I just by-pass all that admin. stuff...don't need it here...just to have my name ( or my daughter's name...doesn't really matter). and have full access.??
    8. I will repair or even clean install if necessary but seems like there ought to be a way to 'fix' this little problem...

Steve,I had considered a system restore but never tried it, thinking that somehow, this other board was responsible, and that it wouldn't work. But....I will try that tonite. The other scenarios don't fit my situation.

    Thanks...

Well...I cannot access system restore...even when I have changed the credentials to allow administrator or myself.

    It's time to re-install o/s....

    Okay...back to normal.!

I re-formatted & clean-installed...just a minor glitch with getting internet connection with the modem, but the local cable folks are very helpful and will get it going for me.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.
