[XP] Using a Hard Drive From XP To ME

    Merry Christmas,

Can I use a hard drive that was in an XP computer in an ME computer?
It is a Western Digital 40GB IDE set to FAT32.

    Thanks

Yes, there shouldn't be any problem doing that.

As long as you don't want to use XP if it's installed on the drive
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

    Thanks for the replies!

I tried installing it in an ME machine as a slave drive and it wouldn't recognize that there was a drive there. I made sure the one drive in the machine was set to master and the drive I put in was set to slave. I also went into the BIOS to try to get it to recognize the drive. Can I try formatting it in the XP machine then put it into the ME computer?

I went through this just recently in another forum, so forgive me if the question sounds stupid...When you say one drive's master and the other is slave, they're both on the same cable right?

I had someone putting each drive on separate cables, and the one set to slave wasn't showing (obviously) - and it took about ten posts to straighten it out, I thought the person knew better.

Yes they are. I had a master and a slave drive already in so I disconnected the slave drive and plugged the other slave drive into it right away. I also made sure the plugs were all in as I have had them pull out slightly when messing around with them.

Boot up with the ME Startup floppy and run Fdisk, and see if that can see the drive. If it can you can repartition and format it from DOS.

How to Use Fdisk and Format

I'm guessing it's dead. When I start with the bootup disk in A: it tells me to enter "Del" for the BIOS and won't continue loading. When I boot up with the hard drives already installed it continues loading the startup disk. Thanks for all the help!
