Removing and reinstalling XP

Hi,
I am having problems with my hard drive divided into D: and E: that keep saying I need to format them after they work for awhile so I want to remove and reinstall XP. XP is an upgrade disk so I'm assuming I will have to install ME first and then XP. What other things am I going to encounter?

No you don't have to install ME first if it's a Retail version...The XP upgrade cd will prompt you to insert the ME cd as proof of purchase.

When it asks what it is upgrading, take out the XP cd and insert the WinMe cd.
