[Home] Windows Media Player 11.0 will not play a .asx file.

What do I need to do to get WMP 11 to play a media file with a .asx extension? Thanks.

An asx file contains data that points the player to a streamable file... asf files (which contain the actual video and/or audio files).

Open the asx in notepad and you'll see the address or location of the file it's trying to get the player to load. ASX files are only a few bytes of info (the size of a small .txt file) so if you have a large file and it's called asx then it's probably got the wrong extension attached to it.

Once you know the address or location of the asf file then you can paste that directly into the player and see if it can locate and then play it. Could be that it no longer exists at that address. If it does exist but the player still can't play it then it could be a codec or much less likely a firewall problem or maybe even a restricted bandwidth issue.

Thanks for the replies. It seems the file in question is stored on another computer that is not networked with mine. I'll inform him of this. If he wants to share this file would it be a safe bet to assume that a file hosting site like boomspeed or photo bucket would be needed?

To share it yes but to stream it as it necessitates you'd need a website or server that allows that sort of link and most filesharing sites that I'm aware of don't.

Windows Media Player 11.0 will not play a .asx file.

WMP does not support playing ASX files directly. You need to change AXS to WMP known formats for playing.

Before converting ASX files, you need to find the right ASX files before playing as there are different cases of ASX files. You need to use varied ways to deal with diverse ASX files.

Some ASX files are just a different from of .wmv or .asf files with missed name. Normally, this kind of ASX files, you just need to rename .asx name extension to .wmv or .asf, and then the renamed file is just the ASX video file. You can easily play this kind of ASX files in WMP.

There are other ASX files with XML text file. In this case, you had better open the .asx file with notepad and find the <REF HREF=.....> to get the path to access the ASX media file directly. If it starts with http, you can download it and get the ASX files. Just copy that complete file path into your browser address bar. If it is a proper media file, it will start playing in Windows Media Player. Use File -> Save Media As and save your file to your computer, then the saved media file is just the ASX video file. As for this kind of ASX files, you need to convert ASX to MP4, WMV, MP3 etc. in order to play them on WMP as WMP does mot support playing ASX at all.

You may find an easy way to convert ASX to MP4, WMV, MP3 etc. to play ASX in WMP here: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...&cd=1&cad=rja&...
