Outlook 2003 always on in background?

Over the past 24 hours, or so, it seems to me that Outlook is always on in the background. While I think the program is closed, It still seems to check for and download new messages. Strange. Anyone experience this?

Need to bring up task manager and see if it's there....

What do you mean when you say: "It still seems to check for and download new messages."

It does show up as a running process in task manager,even though I have closed the program. I have Outlook set to check for email automatically every 10 minutes. When it is running but minimized each new email appears briefly in a little "phantom" window in the lower right corner. It is still doing that even though the app is "closed".
