[RESOLVED] [XP] Desktop question
I'm not sure where to ask this question so I'll ask it here.
Will "Desktop" still be available if there is not an o/s installed? If I wanted to set up a system for just a file server, back-up, digital picture download & organization device, etc,... and didn't want to have to buy an o/s, would Desktop still be there? I'm thinking that the Desktop is part of the o/s but I don't know for sure.

Desktop is part of the OS so if there is no OS installed there will be no desktop.

You could use a free Linux distro...

Thanks, photolady, I thought so after thinking about it.
Ridgerunr...I will have to check out Linux. I know of it but have never looked into how it looks and works.

SuperSparks....ugh!...that was way beyond my knowledge. Right now, between work and helping raise my Grandaughter, I have very little spare time to devote to learning those systems.
I could probably just buy Windows 95 from e-Bay and take the lazy way out... , and that would give me the desktop which I am familiar with.
Thanks for the info...interesting stuff.

Get hold of Win2000 rather than Win95, it would be vastly more suitable.

SS...I will look into that suggestion. After looking at a few Win 95 prices, I thought.." Why not just bump up to at least 98SE, mine was very stable, and all of the updates are still available from various sites",....so I will look around and see what Win 2000 goes for.
I was just trying to keep my expenses down as much as possible...you know how that goes... .
