    Is Indexing Important?

(Mods: please move this if not in the right forum)

In an effort to speed up Vista Premium, I tried disabling Indexing on my PC. Once I disabled it, I noticed a much quieter system and speedier. However, I also encountered that none of my removeable disc (USB) were recognizing devices (camera, mp3). I have memory slots in the modem titled (disc E, F, G, H, I). I noticed they weren't listed under "My Computer".

Once I enabled Indexing and restarted my PC, they magically reappeared. So, brings me back to my original question: Is indexing that important? And how can I get the auto run window to pop up once a device is externally installed?
Thanks and hope you guys/gals can figure this one.
