[Home]resume from standby/hibernate

hello guys. for a while i have been using standby whenever i am away from my pc to save the planet etc. After 45 minutes the pc wakes itself to go into hibernation.

Recently after coming out of hibernation the pc works fine for about a minute then the keyboard and mouse stops responding. even more recently its started hapenning when using standby too. i have checked the event viewer and there is nothing listed at the time of occurrence. ??

I have a kvm switch so i can use 2 pc's with the same keyboard/mouse/monitor but the 2nd pc doesnt have this same problem

please help.

Make sure the hdd is not shutting done.
I know that caused me never again to use anything but manual shutdown.

I'm pretty sure it is. my pc is a bit old and you can hear it whiring and stop whiring when it stops. When i put the pc into standby the hard disk stops and so do the system fans. i thought that this was a good thing. saves energy you know.

note. my 2nd pc doesnt turn off the hard disks when going into standby.

Go into power options and set the hdd to never. That might do the trick.

hmmm. i already tried that and it still goes off when i go into standby and the keyboard/mouse still freeze after re-initializing the pc

Just guessing here and I wonder about the ps size.

Then again, I gave up on the Compaq years before it died.

never mind. i thought it was a long shot as i cant find anything similar through google so it clearly isnt a common issue

that hotfix seems like it would fix my problem. all i need to do is contact microsoft to get it. calling them will cost the low low fee of £47 + 17.5% VAT (£55.23 total (thats $111.16)) i have searched on google but nothing. does anybody know of a source where i can get this? virus free preferable

Are you running SP1 by any chance? The hotfix is included in SP2...so there's an easy fix.

If you're running SP2, was it installed after the OS? You could try slipstreaming and clean install.

Something else you might try is in Device Manager, open the properties on each of your USB ports, click the Power tab and deselect "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

hmm. the plot thickens. i just did a test of not touching the keyboard or mouse while resuming from standby. the pc worked fine... until i touched the keyboard. the mouse works fine, and continued to work fine, until i touched the keyboard. only at this point did the mouse stop responding.

all usb devices have that option turned off and greyed out.

and yes, i have sp2 installed. reinstalling windows is not really an option. i have so many apps that i no longer have the cd's for and i cant lose them.
