[RESOLVED] [Pro] Saved favorites from floppy back to Favorites

I re-formatted and clean installed xp pro last nite. Now I need to transfer some of the favorites from the floppy back to Favorites. I thought I had it when I copied/pasted what I wanted from the floppy to C:\documents and settings\all users\favorites...but they don't show up in the regular Favorites location. What step am I missing...

I'll keep poking around...maybe I'll figure it out...probably real simple.

Other than that, the clean install went well. I thought that I would have to re-install the drivers for the Terayon cable modem but I didn't...I guess xp pro had the drivers?

Of course, the very first thing that I did was to get ZoneAlarm downloaded and running and then the other security stuff.

This evening I hope to do a complete back up to dvd's.

I've never tried it myself for Favorites, but try clicking on File in the Toolbar, then Import and Export and see if XP can import the favorites from your floppy to where they belong.

That's always worked for me. Steve, if you're using Internet Explorer then your bookmarks are saved as html files, if you only want to import some of them then you'll have to either delete the ones you don't want first or move them to another folder and save them there then use file>import/export>import favorites and navigate to the folder on your floppy and explorer will import them from there.

If you're using firefox I can't help you. If you're using Opera, opera saves its bookmarks in a file called Opera6.adr which is a read only file and you won't be able to get rid of individual bookmark links until you have imported them and then you can use "manage bookmarks" to get rid of the ones you don't want.

stevejr--I have several Favorites folders. The really functioning one on my WinXP PC is C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Favorites.
Maybe you are trying to Export the old Favorites into a non-functioning Favorites folder.
The functioning Favorites folder is the one you have set per this procedure
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/favexportpath.htm However, I find that my subKey Name is FavoritesImportFolder, not FavoritesExportFolder.

P.S. A slight variation on what rythymace has posted. If you only want to transfer some of the old Favorites to the new WinXP installation and you have a Favorites folder (see first two paragraphs above), open both the floppy and the new Favorites folder. Then drag and drop the old Favorites you want (from the floppy) into the new Favorites folder.

(Smacks self in head) Good one Jim! I should have thought of that. Good advice to on the inactive favorites folder, don't know why sometimes there's more than one but there are and as you say, only one is actually read by the browser.

Thanks, everyone, for the ideas. I tried to import from the favorites folder under 'all users', where I had copied the links that I wanted to keep, but it wouldn't work...probably I didn't do something correctly.

I then made a new folder on desktop...dragged what links I wanted from the other favorites folder under 'all users'...then with a browser page open, I just dragged & dropped from the new desktop folder to the Favorites folder...(the one on the tool bar with the yellow star icon)...and that did it.

so, thanks again...learned something new today!!
