    Print via IP number in Win98

    Hello all.
    I have a bunch of Win98 machines I need to set up to print. I want to have them print via IP number, but I can't find any software to allow me to do this. Is there such an animal? It would make my life much easier.

    What printer(s) are you wanting to print to? I assume that the printer(s) have ethernet connections. If so, you normally just create a TCP/IP port in the printer setup/properties and use that.

    I thought creating a TCP/IP port could only be done in Win2000 and above? Can you please clue me in on how to do this? I can't find where to create one.

    That will depend on what printer(s) you have and how they are connected to your network.

    The printers are HP, 4000's 4100's etc. They are all on the network connected via IP, with a static IP number.

    The wizard that runs when you choose to install a new printer in Win98 gives you the choice between a local and a network printer. That procedure should end with a functioning printer. Have you tried this and if it fails can you give us some info on what part of it fails.

    If at first you don't succeed.... start working on the next version of Windows.

    Are you using HP's JetDirect software and hardware, or some other hardware to connect them to the network?

    The printers are connected to the network via the network card installed into the printer. The printers were then given a static IP number. I didn't even think to try the software disk (so used to doing it in XP). Anyway, I will try it next week, when I get back to work.

    Solved

    I found the disk that came with the printer. It allowed me to connect via an ip number. I guess we can label this one SOLVED. Thanks all for the help, now I'll hop over to the Vista forum for help with that OS
