    Norton Anti Virus

I have norton 2000 installed on my computer. I had a friend install it. It seems my virus definitions has expired??? Does that happen?
What can I do to protect myself?? I noticed that some sites do offer free downloads??IS this safe? When i checked my email today I got a warning about an attachment and i deleted it. Any advice would be helpful. I know i will likely have to go and buy new software but i would like to know for sure.
    Thanks
    Julia

I would reconfigure my system and go with innoculateIT. Many have dumped those larger AV apps for a smaller footprint app that does the same thing using less system resources. mach

I third the Inoculate setup. Much easier to d/l no worry about 'paying them'; at least yet!

Julia, You can download the virus definition updates for free at this site: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html
After you download them to a folder(My Documents or whatever you choose) just double click on the .exe file and they will install. Or if you prefer to use the Live Update feature which is simpler just call Symantec(Norton) on their 800 number and the cost for 1 year is $3.95 they will give you a code no. and tell you how to install it to activated your Live Update subscription. Hope this helps.

Julia, no matter which antivirus program you use, the virus definitions should be kept up to date. For most people, that means updating them over the web at least every two weeks.

I use the Live Update feature of Norton Antivirus personally, and really like it. It is simple to use and can be set to give you a reminder to check for new virus definitions every couple of weeks. (That's helpful for an airhead like me who is always forgetting things.) For the way I work, I haven't found it to be enough of a drain on the resources to worry about. I can work on the computer all day with the antivirus running in the background, and my resources are still up to 75-85%. I shut down every night, so start again at about 96% the next day. But everyone's situation is a little different. You'll have to use your judgment as to whether you think saving a few percentage points on resources is important.

The latest version of Norton AntiVirus (NAV 2001), has an auto-LiveUpdate feature. Just enable it, and then every time you connect to the Internet, it will run out and look on the Symantec site to see if there are any new virus protection updates. If so, it automatically downloads and installs them for you. I wouldn't be without it.

    Happy computing!

    I am confused.

If she just uninstalls and re-installs, she will just have the virus definitions that came with the original program, no updates. Is that correct? She will still need to get updated defintions. Meaning she will need to use Live-Update.

Hi Julia, Welcome back. All of the above are choices you can make work however the explanation by Airhead covers Norton best.

Inoculate is free, easy to install but you will have to register and then download your updates through the CA web site. It's not difficult.

Norton on the other hand, if you're not comfortable with downloading and installing, is real easy as the others said. It does it all for you. The one thing I wouldn't recommend is uninstalling and re-installing it.

Yes, that will make your machine and Norton think it's a new installation and therefor give you whatever months of "free" updates are allowed as the purchaser but remember that you will be in effect, stealing the upgrades and at the end of the cycle you'd have to do it again.

It also means you will be starting all over from the date of manufacture so that if you don't upgrade your virus protection will be out of date.

Sorry ylen13 but there are good free programs out there such as inocculateIT. If we have any credibility here at all either take advantage of free software or pay the freight.

Last point. When you say that the definitions have expired do you mean that a window has popped up that said that asking if you want to update them or do you mean that you can no longer get your free updates.

If your friend installed it for you and you haven't used the updater yet it's just telling you that you can click on live update and download them for free as part of the purchase / installation and it will do the whole job for you.

If the subscription has run out it should have given you plenty of warning, I think 60 days, that you need to pay for another year. It sounds like you have some free updates coming and it's just telling you to get them.

In the upper left corner of the main Norton anti-virus screen you'll see a button marked LiveUpdate. Just click it and follow the directions.

    Luck to you.
