Resolved [RESOLVED] Problem Hosting StarCraft Games

    hey all,

i've done some pretty thorough research on this issue and i'm still not coming up with a solution.

i'm currently unable to host games on Starcraft. whenever anyone tries to join, they're met with the error "Unable to join - The latency of the game creator is too high" (although recently i was able to get one friend to join, but no more than him).

there's no problem with my connection speed, it clocks at 3.2 mb/s on test websites. the only soft firewall that i have installed is the windows XP firewall (im running pro sp2) which seems to be corrupted. when i try to start it, it says "windows cannot start the windows firewall/ICS device," which leads me to believe that the firewall is disabled.

my desktop computer is currently jacked into my wireless NETGEAR WGR614v6 router, and i have followed the steps on www.portforward.com to open port 6112 both UDP and TCP to allow hosting of Starcraft games

my problem still persists, however. although my friend was able to join the other day, nobody else has ever managed to join a game of mine (note that this friend was NOT on my LAN connection)

The problem probably is your router has changed you ip number.

They do that every 24 hours unless you make some changes.
Client Lease Time: 0 (0 means one day). I have been know to change that , but it is done in minutes. E.I. 60 x 24 x 7 + a week type thing.

To check your IP number. For XP
Start > Run [type in] cmd and hit the enter key.
    [Type in] ipconfig

    Now read the IP Address.
Does it match what you set in port forwarding. If not change the IP in port forwarding.

yeah, they match. i had the router configured to a static IP address for a while, but that wasn't helping either

as i recall, when i set it to a static IP address (using numbers copied from ipconfig) and then forwarded port 6112 to that IP address, i would later check my IP address in ipconfig and it would have changed.

    for example:
    ipconfig /all
    IP address reads as 192.168.1.126
static ip address set to 192.168.1.126
    forward port 6112 to 192.168.1.126
    ipconfig /all
    IP address reads as 192.168.1.136

Set you final octalate to less than 50 for a static.

    example.
    192.168.1.9
Don't for get to set the Subnet Mask to match the one in ipconfig.

    Maybe that will work.

eesh, i tried doing that, and my internet stopped working entirely. then i tried to set the router and network connection back to auto, and it still wouldnt work. my ipconfig was reading as 10.0.0.2 or 10.0.0.3

i ended up just bypassing my router to get back online

i think i figured out what has been the problem all along.

even after bypassing the router, people weren't able to join my games, meaning that it wasn't a problem with port 6112 (or if it was, there was another problem on top of that)

this computer that i'm using is a used computer. i was searching the registry for the phrase "firewall" and found that the old owner had at least 4 other firewall programs installed, which could have disabled windows firewall and upon uninstalling them, windows firewall still couldn't start up. i think somehow this is blocking access while using starcraft - although i can join games fine.

from what ive researched, people have been able to fix this problem with the XP SP2 firewall by uninstalling SP2 and performing a registry fix, or reinstalling XP altogether.

i don't really want to take the time and effort to do any of this though, as this isn't my main computer. my main computer's OS system data is currently corrupted, and the entire point of this computer was to be able to surf the net in the meantime while my main computer is down, and to slide the main computer's HD in and set it as a slave drive, salvage the data, and reinstall XP on the main HD.

    THE PROBLEM WAS:

Windows Firewall was corrupted and wouldn't let me host.

I fixed my main computer and plugged it into the same router with the same settings (port 6112 forwarded) and everything worked.

Today's lesson: Don't install too many firewalls!

You will need to into the router and forward the port(s) needed.
