Better E-Mail Software

Hi, everybody,

I have been using Eudora (sponsored mode) - free of charge and legally - for over 10 years, because I do not like Outlook or Outlook Express.

Good thing about Eudora is that all e-mail attachments can be held separately away from the message (that is how I set it up), and if I update the attachments, I can always for sure get the original attachment updated without a hassle (because they work on the SAME attachment - and not a copy of it which, in the case of Outlook or Outlook Express, is stored in some unidentifiable way with the e-mail). Also, because of Eudora's smaller user-base, less attention on the part of hackers is paid to sabortage it or to build malware around it (and its address book), unlike what we have seen with Outlook/Outlook Express.

The latest version of Eudora (7.1.09) I use and since upgrading to it, I have found, is a MEMORY HOG. Even 1 Gig of memory is till not enough when I start Eudora when I have other apps (such as Excel and Word together) running at the same time. My computer turns frigid for a while !!!!

Any one can suggest a good user-friendly e-mail software for Windows XP ?

I've used "The Bat" for years...

Very configurable, small footprint, versatile and secure. My (recent) version 3.8 uses about 7-8 megs most of the time and never interferes with any other program. It's also very easy to set up any number of identities or separate email addresses.

No freeware version though unfortunately.

You say

Concerning 2) you can accomplish that in Outlook and Outlook Express by setting them to "Read all messages in plain text". See http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho....php?p=1142939
But concerning 1) I cannot offer comment since I am not sure what you mean by "update" an attachment--within the email program.

I have read the thread you mentioned.
In reply to your response, here is an example on both of my points:
Say you send me an e-mail with an article you have written in Word, called it Jim-Article.doc, which you want me to review and make corrections, and then send it back to you.
Jim-Article.doc will be held in my file c:\Eudora-In-Attachments,
whereas, you might in your e-mail, have something to say about your articles (e.g. particular points you want me to pay special attention, to verify, or to expand, or propound, etc.)
Now, I opened up the attachment (Jim-Article.doc), and make all the changes, etc. there, and then saved it. It is the same document you send me.
I can just do the reply and attach it back to you. (It is the same document in my c:\Eudora-In-Attachment\Jim-Article.doc (No other copy of it is in my computer, to confuse me).
Then, after reading my corrections, you made so changes, and send it to me again (as attachment in another e-mail). Eudora will hold the document as c:\Eudora-In-Attachment\Jim-Article(01).doc { adding a serial suffix to denote the version - AUTOMATICALLY, AND VERY CONSISTENTLY (if I have John doing his John-Article.doc, and in lock-step fashion, it will be c:\Eudora-In-Attachment\John-Article.doc, and then John-Article(01).doc, and so forth; Mary can do the same thing, and Joe can do the same thing, on and on }.

OneBigNewbie--I think I understand your explanation.
I would think the original email would still have the original attachment, and the later emails would have the amended attachments. That is how OE would do it.
However, if you mean Eudora amends the attachment to the original email, that is something that OE would not do. (OE does not automatically save attachments to emails in a separate folder, unless it is in the Temp folder where I have never looked and which would be deleted when I rebooted.)
You would have to click on the attachment|Save As.
I do not think I would want an email program to make changes to an earlier email attachment. But if Eudora does that and you like that, OE does not do it to my knowledge.

I can do that with Eudora, if I want to. AND THE FILENAME OF THE DOCUMENTS will resemble the original (so that they can be grouped together); whereas with OE, generic names are assigned for attachments which bear no resemblance to their original filenames.

Anyways, I am not going to use OE.

FYI... the bat can optionally store attachments in a separate directory or within the body of the email. That can be set on an account by account basis.

I have never used it but Courier is now free and it can do what you want. I know another big plus for Courier is that individual mail boxes can be password protected from other email users.

I use Calypso/Courier as my e-mail client. It allows you to set it up the way you want, not the way Bill Gates wants. The only significant annoyance is the requirement for a database rebuild if your PC crashes when you have it open, which shouldn't happen often. I am looking forwad to the next version of this program, which is supposedly being worked on.
