what is using my com port 1 ?
Hi all I am trying to get my police scanner software to upload to my scanner, But something is using my com port1, I know it's not the modem this machine does not have a modem.
Is there a program or a way to see what is using my ports?= XP pro.
Task manager won't show ports being used any ideas? thanks newme.
I have to use the 9 pin serial port for my scanner cable.

Just a thought:
The other day, I got the same message whilst trying to get it to detect a SmartBoard...solved it by unplugging the cable and re-plugging it in...
Have you tried the other Serial Port?
Does device Manager shed any light?

Thanks, hongman, tried the cable several times, device manager will not list the ports being used? the program i am using which used to work but now does not is Win92 for my pro 92 police scanner , and it needs com port1 to work but something else is using com port1?
Device manager show my start and running processes, but it's hard to narrow down which one is using com port 1.
I really need a program or some way to find out whats using the port? I know there used to be a free program on the web that showed the ports being used, but I can,t remember it.

In my searches for 'port scanners' have not found any...(yet)...that name 'who' is using the port.......perhaps a poster will come along who knows of one.

Aport is only for TCP and UDP ports, it works great for that but not for com ports.
Has anyone else found a solution.

newme--I am no expert on this, but a couple of ideas
1) Start|Run|type msinfo32|OK. This opens the System Information window. In the left panel click Component and then Port. You may learn what is connected to COM1. Belarc Advisor or Everest may also tell you

2) This article, while quite old. has much info which is still valid
