Video DVD is not being detected

Using XP, Dell computer and Blockbuster movies.

Video DVD is not being detected. Put video dvd in the tray, pushed tray in, and light blinks. The last 4-5 times I had the problem, I repeatedly inserted the DVD and finally it was detected, after 10-15 trials.

When I click on My computer, DVD drive, I get a message that there is no video dvd there. Click on Medial Center and get a message that there is no video dvd in the drive. Click on Media Player and Media Player does not play the dvd.

What is my problem, or better still, what is my solution?

A dirty dvd is one possibility and one I have seen with Blockbuster.

A damaged dvd which needs to be replaced, seen a few of them.
And when was the last time you used a lens cleaner cd to clean that dvd drive?

You can get them from most places that have dvds and music cd.

Warm water and a couple drops of soap, rub it in with your finger tips, rinse real well. I let them air dry.

    Train:

Will try your suggestion, but I do not think that is the problem. The dvd drive has been used minimally, 15-20 times, and the computer is only 6 months old. But, will try. "A drowning man will grab at a razor blade."

Tried the dvd in my wife's computer and it played immediately. Again, my DVD drive is not recognizing that a DVD is there.

A couple of possibilities. Try a lens cleaner to clean the laser in the drive.
The firmware for the drive may need to be upgraded. You can see if one is available at the web site of the drive Mfg. It also may be that the copy protection on the DVD will not let it play in a PC...
    Stupid question? No such thing!
