Show Desktop.scf not working :/

Hi ppl,

To be honest, I dunno how this happened but my Show Desktop.scf icon in my quick launch bar has ceased to be working...now just shows as a regular file icon and doesn't work anymore Anyone know what could be the cause?

The information in the .scf file is:-

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3

[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

and I'm currently using Win XP.

If anyone could help, it be great...it's quite annoying having to minimise everything manually :/

wouldn't booting into CD and trying a windows repair from your windows CD, work?

Hmmm, that file looks fine - you could try removing the blank line from it. This is how the Elder Geek has it:


[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

As an alternative the Windows key + D, or Windows key + M will do exactly the same thing as Show Desktop.

The Windows Button + D works great btw ta

The problem with the icon though is that it isn't associated with anything...just has that normal looking Icon :/

Check and see where the shortcut is pointing to.

Oh, ok. I thought it was a shortcut to something else.

Have you tried making a new script? I tried creating a new one on my C:\ root and it seems to work fine for me. It's attached if you want to try it. I just copied these lines into Notepad and saved it as Desktop.scf:

Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

You might also try checking your file types and see if there is a listing for the *.scf extension. There shouldn't be anything listed under that extension, since Windows hides its own system associations.

If there is something there, it means a program has changed it.

Okay, I'm trying to do the same thing. I have created the file and put in in my windows/system32/etc./etc./quicklaunch folder. It shows up in my start menu, but I still have nothing on the task bar. Can this be done?

Went there, did that. Now I have a shortcut on my desktop and in my start menu, but not on the taskbar. Can it be like it was in win98?

You've put the shortcut in the wrong place - it should be in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

You can restore the original filetype entry for .scf by creating a registry entry file like "fixscf.reg" and putting this in it with NotePad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.scf]
@="SHCmdFile"


Then double-click on it which will load it.
