Now if Symantec would provide a patch for Save and Remove, which came out only about six months before Vista went RTM.

ZA have blown it as far as I'm concerned. I'm using NOD32 now, and I'm very happy indeed with it. It has the consistently best results for any AV program tested.

I saw in a computer magazine headline today. "The great anti virus rip off" or words to that affect. Anyway it went on to say that NOD32 was excellent and that the free version of AVG was way better than most if not all of the others.

    Nick,

I haven`t used ZA for years. Couldn`t get their "True Vector" gubbins to work on my last machine, even with ZA tech support.

I`m going to install NOD32 when my Vista arrives in a few days (Hooray!!!)

What are you using for a firewall? The Vista one? If so, have you configured the outbound protection?

Yes, I'm using the Vista one, and I've left it at it's default configuration for the moment. I've always thought that the outbound protection was overrated as a security measure anyway. At least the Vista one doesn't break anything. Every single one of the many firewalls I've used in the past has stopped some web pages working as they should, or caused problems with other apps.

    I agree with you there.

I just wondered if you were getting along OK with it as I had decided to use it myself.

I`m behind a router and the stealth tests at Steve Gibson`s site declare that my machine is invisible with no firewall at all. So I am just going to stick with the Vista firewall even when compatible firewalls are available. No point in installing unnecessary software.

I reckon a good antivirus, the Vista firewall and Windows Defender will be enough protection to have running in the background.

I agree. And, if you can, I'd advise installing 64-bit Vista. That way you'll get the very useful PatchGuard protection as well. Plus it will only accept signed drivers.

NIck`s suggestion has come a bit too late. I ordered the 32-bit Ultimate OEM which is an awful lot cheaper than Retail. It is all I will need on this laptop.

I swithered for weeks between Premium and Ultimate. Knowing me, if I had got Premium, I would at some point start wishing I had Ultimate

With the Ultimate Retail, you get both 32-bit and 64-bit disks in the box. Is that not the case with OEM?

I had to get retail because I play around with my hardware so much, couldn't justify the Ultimate edition, don't think I'll regret it.
