XP Pro Validation problem
I have a major power surge yesterday and both my hardrives were wiped clean. Apparently the version of XP pro that I have isn't genuine and now I have to buy a new copy. I went to the local computer store and all he has is the full OEM Home version. Is it possible to just use the key that comes on the home edition for my Pro edition or do i need to take out Pro and install home instead?

You will need to install Home instead.

Ok thanks guys, i decided to contact MS and order a full version of XP pro. They sent me a new CD key and I did all the updates. I am having a weird issue now though. I installed SP2 and now my Maxtor External USB 2.0 drive worn't work. It comes up that it is detected but XP can't find drivers for it. I umplugged it and plugged it into my laptop running only SP1 and the drivers were found without a problem. Any idea what I can do?

If it was connected when you had the power surge it could be either the controller or the drive are fried too.Try removing the drive from the case and installing it internally to see if access is possible.

This drive was installed after the new operating system was installed and worked perfect before SP2 was installed. It actually worked with SP2 until I unplugged it. When I plugged it back in the found new hardware wizzard popped up but windows could not find drivers for it. I wonder if it is possible to uninstall SP2 and go back to SP1??

Try it in a different USB port or with a different cable if you can and see if it makes any difference.

Ok I just tried that and the found new hardware wizzard popped up again. It said found USB device but couln't find the drivers for it. This has to be a software issue? All my other usb devices are working correctly.

Still having the same problem....I can't get my USB hardrive to work no matter what I do. When I plug it into a different port the found new wizzard pops up every time but the windows just can't find the driver for it. I am confused because it worked before without a problem.
