Hi btcomm,
Here are two better-than-windows-explorer programs. I've used Power Desk for years - the current version is v6. There is probably a freeware version floating around but I don't think that would have the features you are looking for. I have Ac Browser plus (freeware) installed but I keep forgetting to use it, so I can't tell you if it will do what you want it to do, but it does seem full-featured as a Windows Explorer replacement (not IE - don't be confused by the "browser" name) , so you might want to check it out.
