    Vesa 75

    Hiya....

You all have seen those swing arm mounting gizmos for LCD computer monitors? They allow you to mount your monitor to desks, walls, poles, etc......

Well...I am constructing a custom one since most are expensive and don't do quite what I want mine to do. However....I need to know about the actual mounting screws that would normally come with a purchased swing arm kit. I have found that the VESA 75/100 standard (which is the one I have) calls for mounting screws that are 4mm in diameter. However....I can't find out the length or thread coarsness.

I will be going into a Home Depot to buy the things I need and screws are classified by their length, core diameter, and thread coarseness. Need to know what to buy....

    Anybody know?

In case it matters....the monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 931b (!9-inch)...and it is has the VESA 75 screw configuration as far as I can tell.

#8 3/4 inch should do fine if your wall is wood.
Sheet rock, #8s and wedge expanders if you can find them.

What I use for bathroom safety rails. 3 on each end. And I weigh 210 pounds.

Maxx, if you mean the screws that hold the Vesa mount to the back of the monitor, they are standard pitch M5 screws. The length depends on the Vesa mount, but I used M5 x 10 on mine. If they seem a bit short, try M5 x 15.

M4 x 12 are the usual size for attaching the LCD panel to the mount. Length will depend on the thickness of whatever plate or panel you are going to mount the LCD onto. At the M4 size, you should be using standard thread spacing, not the fine metric spacing - probably .7

Yes....this is the connection of the plate to the back of the monitor. Thanks for the replies...it should be the info I need when I go shopping.

About the plate thickness....I am not sure yet. I have to see what I have laying around. I don't want to go too thick since cutting it will be a problem. All I have is a jigsaw with a metal cut blade. Not like I have a big band saw or anything. Just need to cut it a little larger than the 75mm screw pattern on the back of the monitor. I figure 3/16 inch thick steel should be about right....quarter-inch at the most. The monitor isn't that heavy....

The Vesa bracket that I bought is a casting, so it's hard to judge. But I'd have thought that 1/4" plate would be more than sufficient.

I have to devise and construct a tilt-adjustment hinge of some kind on the other side of the plate. Still working out the engineering on the adjustable bits....

I am essentially wanting to functionally copy this schematic:

Now that device is over $300....and is wall-mount. I am looking to shave costs substantially by making something like it myself....and I also want it mounted to a moveable cart which will house the computer. I figure the weight of the computer will go a long way to counterbalancing when the monitor arm is extended.

The one I bought wasn't exactly cheap at £60, but it was a heck of a lot less than that I think it is US made as well. Let me see if I can hunt down what make it is.

Here is where I got the schematic....and I was wrong about the price....

    It's actually over $400............

Like I say....wall mount is no good for my plan. However....if this setup can be gotten cheaper than that price, I am sure I can modify it for a portable version. Keep in mind...I need the keyboard and mouse tray extensions too.

Made a change to my plans....

Decided to save a few steps and bought the arm part seperately. Instead of having the keyboard and mouse are on the same device, I can make a seperate tray for those.

Ended up getting this gizmo for around $100....

Now that I have this 19-inch LCD on the arm and in my face. I realize I didn't really need a 19-inch monitor....just needed to be closer to the 17-inch....LOL
