Windows critical update? Won't stick??
Hi guys,
I'm running Win98FE with I.E.5.5.. And ya',,i know having the "Critical update notification" enabled can be a pain in the butt. but i figger, it "is" after all, my decision whether or not i want to install something.
So, i've said that, to explain this.. When the latest security update was released. The one named "Security update,April 2,2001, i went ahead and let it download. It said: install was successful bla-bla..But, ever since then , about every couple of days, the critical update available window pops-up to say critical update is available do you want to install?
And guess what? It's the "same" update Is this thing just not "sticking" or what? I've done nothing dramatic as far as installs/uninstalls lately. But this has happened at least a' dozen times now.
Anyone else have this problem? It's beginning to get very annoying. And you know how it is trying to contact M$N support.(ya',,right!!)

Hi Snarfll, ad nauseum (Microsoft). Is that one you can uninstall. If it is uninstall it. Then if it continues, you'll know it's the update. How's it going other than that?

Hi greengoose 'an all,
To answer your question, there is no uninstall for it cause it's a "security update"..At least no way i know of.
Sorry to take so long answering, but now i have a much bigger prob. I'm typing this from my "other" machine cause "now" i have no dial-up connection for my main one.(this will really give you a grin:-) )..
M$N's "new" dial-up update caused my main computer to crash. Could not access "any" web pages! "page timed out" on all of them. Can't even access the msnmember.msn.com page. I finally got ticked and uninstalled my msn dial-up from add-remove and did a clean-up on the machine.
When i was thru, i tried using the old msn CD (msn access 5.0), which i've done in the past with no problems when i've had to do a re-install of Windoze. But guess what?,,it don't work no more!! Been on the phone all afternoon with msn tech shlupport and customer service with no joy.(gee,,how unusual ). Followed all their advice?,,including changing password(used new one techie gave me)Nothing will get me back online with my main 'puter.. To get online with this lil' one, had to change password to the one they gave. Have been trying to find a way to dowload msn's internet access package, but so far can't find it online. No "install" offered in the folder on this machine either.
Just 'nuther case of Micro$oft's forward thinking i guess
If anyone knows if the msn access package is offered online and where it's at, i'd really appreciate the info. Been to zdnet and looked, but no joy..
Well,,back to lookin',,i guess..
'cept for that greengoose,,it's goin' just peachy~~~~~~

Do you have time to explain how did you get it fixed. How were you able to get the "old access" working? Just curious.

greengoose,(and anyone else interested,of course), The CD i referred to is the one they sent out about a year ago offering the upgrade to MSN 5.0 from the old 2.5 dial-up program. I received 3 of these, 2 on advertising things(like the AOHell coasters) and the one i kept, i received with my AARP sign-up to MSN(6 months for $89.00US).
The CD also has I.E.5.01 which installs automatically when you run it. But, i digress
When you run it, it picks up your previous dial-up info like your area code and what type of phone service you had before and dials MSN's toll free numbers to set-up your service. When i tried to use it to re-install my dial-up, it would go as far as trying to make the toll free call. It would connect, but instead of going to the sign-up phase(i.e. enter your state>city>local phone numbers to dial) a window would come up saying "the service is not available at this time" with the options of "cancel" or "re-dial". I tried the "re-dial" at least a dozen times with no joy. That's when i tried calling tech support(who told me it was a customer service problem) and that i should call "them". In other words:go away son,,your bothering us~~~~ Anyway, after much frustrating explanation and "infinity" on hold, i gave up and tried the sign-up CD one more time with my fingers(and toes) crossed,,an' lo' n' behold!! the call went thru and it signed me in!!I was suspecting the toll free numbers were no longer available, but they obviously are.But may have a "back burner" setting to discourage their use?? Of course when i got online it immediately popped up the "new version available" box. And there is "no" (X) to close or "cancel" on it.(heh-heh)
I just wish they would offer the upgrade on CD or for download, would save all the hassle. Have sent MSN a mail concerning this, but, well, not holdin' my breath for an answer.
Oh ya',,on the critical update April 2,2001 thing? I've sent an e-mail to Windows support about "that" and they just sent me a confimation received mail, and say a tech will get hold of me on it.(oh yeah )And, just as i finished this post, i got another pop-up window from "windoze critical update available",,Gee,,wonder what "that's" all about??

You can try downloading and installing the security patch manually, and see if that keeps Critical Update happy!

WhitPhil,
Thanx for the suggestion. I tried downloading and saving the .exe to file. It saved ok, but it apparently doesn't have a valid installer with it. Wouldn't install. Just got a very quick pop-up "install" window then nothing. As when you d/l a program with a corrupted installer.
Went back to the site, turned off IPE and ZA and let it open and install from there. Don't know if it "stuck" this time, but time will tell.
Will let you know the outcome.
Thanx again!
Well,,maybe,,went over to Windoze update directly after this post and it shows it as "installed". We'll see if it "sticks" this time.

Thanks alot snarfll. Looks like 80% of your time was waiting on the phone. A Microsoft Monday is not real fun from the looks of it. May the rest of your day be better.
