I keep losing: Show screen tips on toolbars

Using Word 2003, XP, on a dell computer.

I keep losing: Show screen tips on toolbars. I click on tools, then customize, and put a check mark in Show screen tips on toolbars and a check mark in Show shortcut keys. Close.

I use it one time and the feature is then lost. I have to go through the same process again and again. How can I lock in those check marks so that screen tips are shown?

Have you visited the Windows Update site and installed all the patches and fixes for Office 2003? If not try that first. The site requires Internet Explorer . . . Firefox, Opera or others will not work:

I cannot make heads or tails out the microsoft website. The site indicates that other browsers will work. (I am using firefox). I am already set up for automatic updates.

I opened IE. Went back to the site and clicked on Office 2003.

Looked for a button that said: Search my computer, tell me what downloads I am missing, and then download. Could not find anything close to that.

OK, try the regular Windows Update site:
    http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us
After scan of your system Office updates that are available will be shown as a link on the left along with any others that are available.

Went to this website, which is a white sheet which starts off:

Thanks for your interest in obtaining updates...etc

I have already done what it request, i.e., setting updates to Automatic. I then opened IE and reduced it. I did this at 5:58 and set the automatic download to occur at 6:00. Nothing happened.

I am looking for a button someplace that says: Scan my computer for downloads.
Cannot find any such button. I am close to giving up.

You have to use Internet Explorer. You cannot use Mozilla to obtain updates from Windows Update. Right click on the link and choose "Open Link Target in IE" from the dropdown menu. The site should display correctly if opened in Internet Explorer.

Took a look at the downloads and downloaded several. Ignored those which were obviously not relevant, since I do not care about improving recognition of the Dutch language or the Korean language, etc.

Nothing seems applicable to my problem. Will not worry about it anymore. If it does not work, it just does not work.

    Thanks for trying.
