    Unwanted files

    Hi there,

Not sure if this is the correct forum; if not, please move it.

I have a number of partitions, the last (H holds an image of my o/s. I try not to write anything but the image to this partition.

Whenever I start PhotoShop CS, the files Twain.log, twunk001.mtx twunk002.mtx and twunk003.mtx are created in H:.

I have done a bit of Googling but can find little that tells me what they are, how to remove them and/or, how of get them created on my Temp partition that gets emptied when I close the computer.

Have searched the reg. but there seems to be nothing. Twunk 16.exe and Twunk 32.exe are in C:/WINNT; I have tried to rename them but they are recreated. Nothing found using SypBot S&D or AdAware.

Really grateful for any advice, particularly if they can be moved to my Temp partition.

I wouldn't move them to a temp partition that gets deleted. They are a function in Photoshop used for aquiring images via a scanner. They're needed, and an essential part of Photoshop.

    PhotoLady,

Thanks for your reply. I hear what you are saying, but why are they created to a partition that I have not listed in PhotoShop?

I have two partitions set as Temp. E: is specifically for PS scratch files and F: is for Temp Internet files but I also have it set to PhotoShop should E become full. There is no mention of H: (my image partition.)

Those files were installed when you installed Photoshop. If it thought it should put those files on H, it would. Usually though they are installed in the Windows/system32 folder. Might try uninstalling Photoshop and reinstall it, making sure the install path is set to C:/program files/adobe . Are you sure they are not part of the image you made? I can't see that happening as the image is compressed surely.

Check in windows/system folder for those same files, see if you have duplicates. If so, you may be able to delete the ones on H leaving them in the recycle bin for a few days before emptying it, just to be sure.

Several of the Adobe photshop programs ask you several times where you want to put things. And the default sometimes is the last drive.

Can't see those files (twunk001.mtx etc.) in the Sys32 folder. I do delete them from H: but they are always recreated.

As I said previously, if they have to be there, fine, but why would PhotoShop automatically create them in a partition that I have not told it about.

On my other HD (W2k/FAT32) these files are not created on the last partition, which also holds my os image.

Perhaps reinstalling is the thing to do.

Normally, that drive is on another hdd and if it crosses the ide, it would speed things up.

A trick I like and use.

    Train and PhotoLady,

I followed your advice and uninstalled PhotoShop and reinstalled it again, but have the same result. Twain.log and twunk001.mtx etc are being created on H:.

During reinstallation, I saw no screens that offered a location for any file. The only options are in Preferences for the PhotoShop scratch files and I have those set for E: and F:.

This was not happening with my W2k/FAT32 os. Is it an NTFS thing?

    Hi Rex,

Taking a shot at this. Do you have TweakUI in your control panel?
If so, check the MY COMPUTER tab and the SPECIAL FOLDERS section. Various items can be assigned here.

Second place to look: CP-->System-->Advanced-->Environment Variables.

    Hope one of these helps.

    KGG,

You may have hit the nail on the head.

TweakUI ....... Installation Files was listed as J: I don't have a J:, so it may have been defaulting to the next highest drive letter which would have been H:. Altered the drive to F: (Temp) and will see what happens.

Likewise with Environment Variables. Some Temp folders listed as H: so they also have been reassigned.

    Many thanks,

    Rex
