Though I would not have thought of a router port "going bad", that indeed seems to be the case with the one that I have. Switching the connection to another port has banished the sporadic connection problem that I initially posted about. I've booted the machine a number of times now, and it has not missed connecting at all. I'm happy, and am glad that I posted here for the help that I got.
